A company based in Northern Ireland which provides complex cyber security solutions for autonomous and remote vehicles and aircraft has launched a collaborative research programme with Queen's University Belfast Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT). Fantastic 2 days at the APRIL Hub Annual Summit at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. 👉APRIL aims to unite the electronics and AI communities to develop and bring to market AI-based tools that boost productivity across the entire electronics industry supply chain. Highlights: ✅ The APRIL team raising the bar on outreach and public engagement – with the publication of ‘APRIL and the Tower of Techport’ for primary school aged children, written and illustrated by the amazing Ramya Julian! ✅ Challenge session - our industry partners shared problems that they would like solved by the Hub, from how can we verify and validate safety and security claims for high assurance for devices developed using AI, to how AI can help to identify bugs and vulnerabilities in the myriad of reports and logs produced during chip development. ✅Panel discussion on AI & Electronics – focused on regulation, skills and policy. Key takeaways: ⭐ We need to take a risk-based approach to regulation and consider standards at the meta level. ⭐ To address the skills shortage we need public-private partnerships, and consider dedicated teaching fellowships and Research Hardware Engineers in academia. Cyber security researchers at Queen's University Belfast have secured funding from Department for the Economy NI as part of the US-Ireland R&D Partnership Programme to strengthen malware detection on Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Dr Niall McLaughlin and Professor Paul Miller from CSIT are involved in the project with Rochester Institute of Technology, University at Buffalo and University College Cork. Fantastic to be back among a few old friends at CSIT today, and to introduce Ploughshare and Hannah Askew to the great work being done in Belfast. As we build out our networks in cyber and AI, no better place to visit than CSIT's Cyber AI Hub. Having been involved in the planning and funding submission, I was delighted to see first hand how the project has come to life. Thanks to Judith Millar for facilitating our visit, and Melanie Ware for the overview and quick tour. Also nice to bump into Louise Cushnahan and Ihsen Alouani in the corridor, and say a fleeting 'hello' to Maire O'Neill crossing the car park 😃.
