The December 2024 issue of our newsletter is here, and what a month it's been to conclude the year. 📰 Read our newsletter here: https://bit.ly/41Z7lGF In December, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Critical Minerals, Noah Law MP hosted the first meeting of the APPG on 11 December, setting out the group’s priorities for the next year. Minister Sarah Jones announced that Government is publishing a new and updated UK Critical Minerals Strategy in early 2025, with a more ‘targeted and long-term approach’ to securing responsible supply. On the world stage, the European Commission hosted a Principal Meeting of the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) Forum in Brussels at Raw Materials Week 2024. The meeting followed news that China’s Ministry of Commerce will be tightening export restrictions and bans on three critical minerals: antimony, germanium and gallium. NATO, as well, released its list of 12 raw materials critical to the Allied defense industry. At the Association, we hosted our largest annual conference to date, at the Royal College of Physicians in London on 2 December. An article about the conference - including summaries and quotes from the various presentations, panel discussions, and side events of the day - is now available on our website, as well as photos and recordings of the sessions in the Wolfson Theatre. We are also delighted to welcome our newest members to the Association, Vale Base Metals and Agratas. Our December issue provides snippets and summaries of this month’s political and industry developments, past and upcoming events and a global news round-up on critical minerals such as cobalt, copper, graphite, lithium, nickel, manganese, rare earth elements, tin, tungsten, and vanadium. Enabling secure, responsible critical minerals supply chains by providing a platform for Industry and Government.
About us
The Critical Minerals Association was established in 2020 to bring industry, academia, and the government together to create secure and responsible critical minerals supply chains. The CMA brings together the entire value chain to promote greater integration, and to provide a platform for industry to come together and speak to the UK Government with a collective voice. As the Secretariat to the UK's All-Party Parliamentary Group on Critical Minerals, the CMA frequently organises events in Parliament on critical minerals. #HPMS technology takes a prominent mention in MSP meeting in Brussels. “Participants discussed the challenges to developing specific MSP projects, including HyProMag’s rare earth elements recycling project in the UK, Germany and the US” Fantastic to see a specific mention of our #HPMS magnet recycling technology at this weeks MSP Project Deep Dive meeting, hosted by the #Republic of Korea and the #UnitedStates. HPMS is a key technology to the MSP and consistently takes a prominent mention in the recycling and recovery of Rare Earth Elements from magnets. Hydrogen Processing of Magnetic Scrap (HPMS) was developed in the Magnetic Materials Group at the University of Birmingham and can efficiently liberate and recycle magnets from end-of-life scrap whilst using just 10% of the energy required for production from primary materials. Having commissioned the UK’s first rare earth magnet recycling pilot plant at the University of Birmingham in 2022, HyProMag Ltd together with the University of Birmingham, are developing a large-scale recycling plant at Tyseley Energy Park, Birmingham with ongoing expansion into Germany and the US. Do you know someone who loves playing Minecraft?! BGS have a range of geological models and environments available to download - including a volcano! There are five worlds available which each use real geological data to show what it's like in the ground beneath your feet and help make geology more accessible. Alongside the volcano, some of the models also include Glasgow, York and Great Britain. The models are free to use and geological keys can be found on our website alongside links to download. Happy building 🌋⚒️😎 https://lnkd.in/eN-drPDF

Did you know? Starting 1st January, significant changes have reshaped how electric and electronic waste (WEEE) is handled worldwide. These updates stem from the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, aiming to better regulate the shipment of hazardous waste and protect human health and the environment. What does this mean for the metal recycling industry? ♻️ Stricter rules on international shipments will push the industry to develop local recycling solutions, reducing reliance on exports. 🌍 Recycling companies will face more responsibility to ensure compliance with environmental standards when handling hazardous materials like WEEE. ✅ Transparent processes and investments in new technology will be critical for staying ahead. As an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF), Unimetals plays a key role in managing WEEE responsibly. This new regulation directly impacts the way we do business, but we are fully prepared to meet the new compliance requirements. Stay tuned as we reveal how these changes impact our operations and how we continue to lead in sustainable metal recycling. 🌍♻️ Would you like to read more about the Basel Convention?
