On September 27, the FDA approved Sanofi and Regeneron’s dupilumab (dupixent) for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - the first biologic medicine for patients with the disease to be approved in the US, reports Timothy Smith in HCPLive. “This latest FDA approval represents new hope for the hundreds of thousands of COPD patients in the U.S. who can sometimes struggle just to breathe during their everyday lives,” george yancopoulos, MD, PhD, president and chief scientific officer at Regeneron, and principal inventor of dupilumab, said in a statement. In our September COPD Tracker, we identified 18 posts from US HCPs about COPD medications, a rise of 41.6 per cent on the rolling monthly average. Among these was a post by Surya P Bhatt, MD, who described news of dupilumab’s approval as a “truly groundbreaking moment” for those suffering with COPD. On October 3, the FDA extended the approval of Bristol Myers Squibb’s nivolumab for the treatment of adult patients with resectable non-small cell lung cancer following the results of the CHECKMATE 77T trial, reports Gillian McGovern in Pharmacy Times. Tina Cascone, MD, PhD, associate professor of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, said the approval was a “step forward" for patients with resectable disease.
