    Director at CREATE GLOUCESTERSHIRE

I am delighted to have been awarded an MBE for services to the Arts. I share this honour with all the people whose passion, wisdom and generosity have shaped my work in Gloucestershire and the wider South West region. And with dear family and friends who have been there throughout the triumphs and challenges of working to make the arts everyday for everyone. The arts are not simply nice to have - they are vital. Art and creativity enable us to express what matters most - to reveal our ideas, our cultures, our hopes, fears and dreams - and to connect with others through a myriad of artforms and creative interventions which transform places and our communities. You can't win or lose in the arts. You can’t get them right or wrong. When competition and division have left too many feeling that their story is not valued or important, the arts enable us each to listen and to be listened to. Through the arts we discover our common ground as well as our differences, opening dialogue that can bring us to a new and kinder understanding of each other. In 2025, alongside the fantastic Create Gloucestershire team, our Board, members and all our collaborators, I look forward to connecting more people and communities to the amazing artists and cultural organisations we have in Gloucestershire and across the UK.

We are pleased to open applications for the 2024-25 chapter of our Artist Development Project, supporting Black music creators who are also women, non-binary, trans or gender non-conforming people. The transformative programme, whose alumni include artists such as Marla Kether and GROVE, will support artists based in South West England towards self-releasing their music and building self-reliance in their careers as independent creatives. Full info: https://lnkd.in/eFw5i4Ps With thanks to the PRS Foundation Talent Development Partner Network for helping to make this project happen 📸 Naomi Williams

  • A lot of CG’s thinking and action is about the less visible systems, structures and behaviours that create inequalities in Gloucestershire and how this plays out in, and is played out by, the cultural and creative sectors. Building new equitable foundations for how things get done requires the slow, careful work of growing trust across the system. Our team support people and organisations to work better together so they can create the change that matters to them. We also hold the space for dialogue about how to do this in a way that doesn’t further damage our natural world. CG’s long-term systems wide approach is harder to see and count than project based activity. What does a 'trust balance sheet' look like for example? Which is why we deeply appreciate the support of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation who understand how vital it is to re-imagine first; before building the governance and management that can seed and sustain creative, confident, communities. “By opening up the arts to everyone, everywhere, the lives of children you will never meet, whose names you will never know, will be changed forever.” In her first speech, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy sets out arts policy plans at #LabourConference24. Read on for the highlights 👇 1) ARTS EDUCATION 📚 "We’re going to reignite the imagination of the next generation, because a complete education is a creative education." Lisa Nandy announces the upcoming curriculum review that will aim to "put arts, sport and music back at the heart of the curriculum." 2) LOCAL COUNCILS 🏬 Lisa Nandy acknowledged that the slashing of council funding has created "cultural deserts" in parts of the UK. She proposes to hand back power to communities to reclaim their cultural assets and historic buildings. 3) CREATIVE INDUSTRIES 🎭 Lisa Nandy announced plans to support creative industries everywhere - including with councils and mayors - with "good jobs and the chance to write the next chapter in our national story." 4) PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING 📺 The Culture Secretary criticised attacks on public service broadcasters, including the BBC. The Government is about to kickstart the Charter review "to ensure the BBC survives and thrives well into the latter half of this century." 5) ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND 🎨 "We will never accept that there is a trade-off between excellence and access." Lisa Nandy plans to review Arts Council England. She says that it will help "to ensure arts for everyone, everywhere". 6) CIVIL SOCIETY 👥 "They are the central partners in the country we seek to build. They have not just a right but a duty to speak out." - The Culture Secretary intends to reset the Government’s relationship with civil society, including charities & trade unions. ---- We welcome these pledges to address chronic underfunding, neglect & barriers to arts access, education and provision. We call on the Culture Secretary to deliver on all these promises. Because the arts matter, and everybody should have opportunities to experience and engage with them.
