New Years rugby kicks off this weekend. We’d like to wish our partners over at Harlequins the best of luck for their up-coming matches. Both teams are playing away, with the men heading north to Kingston Park to play Newcastle Falcons on Friday evening and the women playing Ealing Trailfinders on Saturday afternoon. #coyq #quins #rugby

We’d like to wish our partners at Harlequins the best of luck in their match at Kingsholm tomorrow. The men’s team face Gloucester in Round 8 of the Gallagher Premiership. Both teams currently sit in the middle of the table and will be looking for points. And remember, if you haven’t finished Christmas shopping, you may still be able to get tickets for the 16th edition of Big Game. Next Saturday, 28 December, the Allianz Stadium – Twickenham will be hosting the biggest annual club rugby event in the world. Harlequins will be playing Leicester Tigers, with the women kicking off at 3pm and the men following them at 6pm. We’re looking forward to some high-octane rugby. If you’re attending the match, don’t forget to look out for the Conrad Energy Power Up moment before the teams run out! #coyq #quins #rugby

A fabulous festive update from Penistone FC, one of our Conrad Energy Community Fund recipients. They’ve come a long way this year, and it’s great to see their progress as a newly formed team. They’ve won and drawn more than they’ve lost, a great start to their first season!

“PPAs are proving an increasingly valuable option for businesses who have been impacted by the turbulence in energy markets in recent years, as they can provide peace of mind, cost savings, and improved sustainability credentials,” says our CEO, Anthony O'Carroll, in Business Reporter. Community engagement is an important contributor to successful energy projects. Great to be collaborating with other developers in the area to bring residents up to speed with the work we’re all undertaking and the long-term benefits it will bring.
Last week saw the first joint information event for the Conrad Energy Grid Stability Facility, along with Verdant Energy’s solar farm and the National Grid substation expansion. The event supported construction activity taking place at Walpole substation from all the developers. Holding joint engagement events such as this help to demonstrate that the projects are working together to minimise disruption to local communities and streamlining incoming enquiries and complaints. #construction #constructioncommunications #constructionengagement #stakeholderengagement

Working in partnership with organisations who share our vision and values is something we’re proud of and which motivates us to keep pushing the envelope every day. Our flagship solar farm at Larport, built on a flood plain and developed in conjunction with our client BNP Paribas, is a perfect example of putting principles into practice. Donna Rourke, Head of ESG and Sustainability at Strutt & Parker, has published an article on their website, explaining how the solar farm helps them to meet their ESG targets. BNP Paribas is their parent company, and the 15 year PPA signed with us has wider reaching impact than simply supplying power to the bank’s London headquarters building. After recent storms, you might have noticed that the weather has changed to be calm with grey skies. Did you know there’s a name for this? The majority of Northwest Europe is currently experiencing challenges due to "Dunkelflaute," a weather condition marked by low wind speeds and heavy cloud cover. This phenomenon limits renewable energy generation, particularly wind and solar power, just as demand increases during winter months when days are shorter and temperatures lower. Wind energy, which typically accounts for a significant portion of the UK's electricity, has plummeted to around 3-4% of total demand at certain peak times. To compensate, gas-fired power plants are stepping up, providing as much as 60% of the required energy. This increased reliance on gas has led to higher generation costs, compounded by elevated global gas prices since the beginning of the Ukraine crisis. The National Grid has flagged tighter margins between supply and demand, suggesting the system is under stress. While the situation remains manageable for now, it highlights the challenge to the system operator during prolonged periods of low renewable output. Enhanced grid resilience and diversified energy strategies will be crucial for future energy security. Our batteries and generators remain on standby to support the grid as required and to help keep the lights on.

Our partners at Harlequins have had a fantastic weekend. The women’s team were away to Loughborough Lightning, where the first half was a constant tussle for possession, leaving the score 10-12 at the break. A disallowed try for Loughborough on 47 minutes upset their momentum and Harlequins took their chance. The back and forth continued with each team exploiting any weakness, until Quins asserted their dominance with two converted tries in the final five minutes. A resounding 22-40 win and a seventh consecutive victory! The men’s team were hosting the DHL Stormers in the second round of the Investec Champions Cup. Their emphatic 46-9 victory featured hat-tricks from both captain Alex Dombrandt and vice-captain Cadan Murley. Harlequins are now lying in third in Pool 4. In January they will face RC Toulon and Glasgow Warriors as they look to move into the knock out phase. On Friday night, the men return to the Gallagher Premiership, away to Gloucester. The following weekend, on 28th December, Big Game 16 sees both men’s and women’s teams facing the Leicester Tigers at Twickenham, where they’re hoping for another attendance world record. Tickets for all three tiers of the stadium are still available through the Harlequins website.
