Climate Psychology Alliance
Non-profit Organization Management
The CPA is a nonprofit membership organisation that addresses the psychological aspects of the climate emergency.
About us
The Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA) is a not-for-profit membership organisation that addresses the psychological aspects of the climate emergency, and was formed between 2009 - 2012. Whoever and wherever we are today, we are affected by the climate emergency, whether or not we know it. A growing number of us are affected physically and materially, and a multitude of us are now affected psychologically and emotionally – in our private thoughts, in our reactions to the latest news, in our senses of loss, anger and despair. The CPA welcomes anyone and everyone to its membership who wants to engage in addressing the psychological aspects of the climate emergency and who would like to understand more about these issues. Our approach is to help recognise and understand our part in the problem, hold the tension between hope and despair to increase practical and creative engagement, restore the feelings, values and justice to the centre of the human picture, and address climate anxiety and existential shame by offering understanding and support. As a not-for-profit membership organisation, we invite people to join in, and come to our individual events. We also work with Partner organisations. We are a Community Benefit Society coordinated by an Executive Group, and supported by an Advisory Group.

This Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the UKCP Conference, themed Psychotherapy in a Changing World. It was wonderful to reconnect with colleagues and listen to inspiring explorations on how psychotherapy can adapt to our rapidly evolving societal and environmental landscape. Two sessions particularly stood out for me. The first was Tree Staunton's talk on climate psychology—a fascinating topic that examines the psychological barriers contributing to our collective paralysis in the face of the climate crisis. Her exploration of how therapists can help clients "think the unthinkable and bear the unbearable" was both challenging and deeply moving. The second was Professor Divine Charura's talk on navigating the tensions of opposites and creating authentic encounters. It was a thought-provoking reflection on how intersectionality, love, and social justice can guide us in creating spaces for growth and healing—not just individually but collectively. Overall, it was a wholesome experience and I’m feeling grateful for it and inspired. #UKCPConference2024 #PsychotherapyInAChangingWorld #ClimatePsychology #Intersectionality #Psychotherapy #TherapistLife #AuthenticEncounters

CPA has been pleased to support training for members of Parents For Future UK on facilitating Parenting Circles. We hope the training will go a little way to further enhancing the care and support this wonderful network provides for parents deeply concerned about their children's future
Parents for Future is partnering with the Climate Psychology Alliance to embed emotional support in our communities. At Parents For Future UK we are growing an inclusive and supportive movement, both to reach our goals in climate justice and as an end in itself to build resilience in our communities. Part of how we do this is supporting our thriving emotional support spaces and by running regular online Parent Climate Circles. We’re pleased to be training 24 more PFF members this autumn as part of a Climate Psychology Alliance partnership. Our cohort of local parent climate organisers are being trained by Jo McAndrews and Catherine Burton (both members of both organisations) to hold and support critical listening spaces in their communities. Lucie Brown, Co-director at PFF said ‘We’re uniquely positioned to support parents at all stages of their journey into climate activism and we take seriously the responsibility of embedding a culture of care into our organising. We’ve still a lot to learn but we’re grateful to have fantastic volunteers guiding this work.’ We’re in the process of planning a programme of ongoing support to ensure that this work embeds in local areas with parents able to care for each other as we navigate climate breakdown and community organising. We are seeking partners to help fund this critical work so that we can truly be the change as we work towards climate justice.
