  • It’s #InternationalVolunteerDay, and we're shining a light on the individuals who offer their spare time to help make our communities safer and tackle crime across Cleveland. Our Special Constabulary are volunteer police officers who work part-time alongside full-time officers and have the same powers and responsibilities. Today we are featuring one such person, Special Sergeant Andrew Warburton, who has taken considerable strides in his rural policing volunteering career. We asked him about his role as a Special Sergeant, and what it means to him: “By day I work in financial services as the Head of Operational Support for a number of institutions, when my day job ends, I am a fully warranted rural crime officer working with our neighbourhood teams and external partners to tackle criminals head-on.” “It is difficult to put into words what it means to me to be a Special Constable, every time I head out it is always with a sense of purpose and a strong desire to be there for our communities when they need us the most. The sense of pride and purpose hits me like a wave every time I put the uniform on and head out.” “I would encourage anyone considering volunteering to consider joining us in the Special Constabulary.” Andrew has recently completed the Wildlife Crime Investigation foundation course, meaning he is now a specialist Wildlife Crime Officer; he is one of the first Specials in the country to achieve this. His services prove vital to the rural areas and wildlife of Cleveland. We thank him, and all volunteers across the force for their tireless dedication to protecting our communities and tackling criminals.
