About us
The Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA) advocates for a fair and effective justice system. Our insight come from our members: over 200 non-profit organisations and academics with expertise across the UK justice system. We investigate key issues in criminal justice, co-produce evidence-led briefings and reports with our members to influence policy change. We connect practitioners, academics, the media, people with lived experience and policy makers from across the justice system to hold the government and other institutions to account and to promote power sharing. STOP PUNISHING SURVIVORS. PROVIDE SUPPORT. Domestic abuse survivors are being unfairly criminalised. Many women are in prison as a direct result of their abuse—coerced into offending, punished for acting in self-defence, or facing malicious allegations as part of a pattern of coercive control. Did you know that 3 in 5 women in prison have experienced domestic abuse, and that Black, Asian, minoritised, and migrant women face disproportionate harm within the system? We’ve co-signed an open letter with over 100 organisations calling on the UK government to: ✅ End the criminalisation of survivors of domestic abuse ✅ Support survivors, rather than punish them The time for action is now. Together, let’s ensure survivors receive support—not punishment. 📢 Read the full letter https://lnkd.in/ep8rW3ur and join us in calling for change. #StopPunishingSurvivors #DomesticAbuse #WomensJustice Women in Prison, Hibiscus Initiatives, Advance Charity, Agenda Alliance, Centre for Women's Justice

The CJA welcomes the Leveson review into criminal courts, alongside the recently announced Independent Sentencing Review led by David Gauke, and the Justice Committee's inquiry into resettlement and rehabilitation, which we hope will all address our failing criminal justice system. We know our courts are in crisis, with what feels like an insurmountable backlog of cases. We continue to urge caution on short-term sentences, and instead call for innovative, alternative, restorative solutions to heal harm. https://lnkd.in/dFQC-_wN

Building more prisons does not mean safer streets. Prevention and community-based alternatives reduce crime, reoffending, and promote public safety more effectively. Read our response to the government's plans to create 14,000 new prison spaces by 2031. https://lnkd.in/gfStbsnR Annette So

This week, we premiered ten powerful new films making waves in the criminal justice sector. Created by the CJA and ten of our members in partnership with Media Trust, these films spotlight critical issues in the criminal justice system and amplify authentic voices demanding change. The initial premiere at Warner Bros. Discovery featured an inspiring panel discussion featuring voices from journalism, filmmaking and advocacy, exploring the intersection of media, and policy change. Thank you to Danny Shaw, Dr Thomas McNeil, William Gilluley, Nick Alexander and Jemma En Rose for sharing your insights. A week later, our 2024 AGM showcased the films to a wider audience, with a panel that explored how sensitive storytelling can challenge media sensationalism and drive systemic change. Thank you to our inspiring speakers Jacob Dunne, Seun Sowole, Tolu Stedford, Jordan Pitt and Chloe Purcell. So what's next? All the films, including the CJA's 'The Cycle' (launching this Thursday at 6PM), are starting important conversations. With more releases to come, these stories promise to inspire real meaningful change in the sector.
