#CILIP is a co-signatory to the Creative Rights in AI Coalition statement, calling on Government to protect copyright as Generative AI policy develops. This new coalition of rights holders including publishers, authors, artists, music businesses, specialist interest publications, unions, and photographers has called on Government to spur growth in the creative and tech sectors by protecting copyright ahead of an imminent consultation. CILIP CEO, Louis Coiffait-Gunn said: "Librarians, knowledge managers, and other information professionals already play lead roles exploring the potential benefits of AI, from managing the data that AI relies on, to using it to offer new services to their users. But for AI to ever reach its potential it must be far more transparent than the current black box models and it must follow UK laws. We've joined this coalition to urge the government to ensure that AI is ethical and supports authors, researchers, and wider society." Spellow Lane Library hit the headlines again this morning but for good reasons - a reopening that sparked a lot of positive energy (including a lantern parade), apt because, as Frank Cottrell-Boyce told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme “There is something very dark about burning a library”. He also mentioned a comment left by a contributor to the fundraising campaign started by Alex McCormick, which raised £250k. The commentator had said the library was important to him because he remembered his mother searching for his alcoholic father on County Road and that she was rescued by librarians. It chimed with a comment made by Denise Jones BEM. BA (Hons) Dip.Inf MCLIP in CILIP: The library and information association magazine, Information Professional, while discussing how professional librarians had reacted to Spellow library being attacked. Most people don’t expect to face crises at work. And you might go on to say “especially not librarians” but as Denise said: “We work with the public and manage staff and buildings so senior library managers are used to dealing with serious issues as they arise. In some ways this means we don’t panic; we just work through processes that have already been tested on previous occasions and we know our roles. These are skills all senior managers in public libraries would recognise.” https://lnkd.in/gA8k7x5V

Spellow Library reopens Works to repair damage to Spellow Library Hub from 3 August this year are now complete, and the library reopens to the public today. Last night, librarians from over 120 libraries across the country left a lamp or light in their library’s windows in a show of solidarity and support to their colleagues in Liverpool. In a shocking incident that marked a new low during a week of rioting up and down the country this summer, Spellow library was targeted and severely damaged by rioters. After word spread about the damage to the library, a public fundraising campaign raised nearly £250,000 to support rebuilding and repair, and secured pledges from authors and even Queen Camilla for book donations. Like public libraries across the country, Spellow Library Hub acts as a warm hub in winter and a provides a cool space in the summer where visitors can work, study, or learn in a safe and welcoming environment. Libraries are beacons of knowledge, hope and sanctuary, and they belong to everyone, providing citizens with a broad range of trustworthy information and support education and literacy across a variety of disciplines and skills. Public libraries are an integral part of our democracy. #LibrariesChangeLives #ShareTheLight #SpellowLibrary

#AiHub – Barriers and Opportunities for AI and Copyright Knowledge and information Managers and librarians have a key role to play in AI adoption and policy when it comes to copyright. In this AI hub update, we have a webinar that answers all the current questions on AI, and an interview with UCL’s Copyright Support Officer, who shares the academic librarian’s perspective. Also in the hub, is AI an information literacy skill? Why students need to develop their research and critical thinking skills in the context of their research. And the dangers of AI exposed in a blog post that shows how AI can pose a risk in the classroom (and library).
