  • We have hailed a major victory on the use of licensing schemes to improve housing standards which followed pressure from organisations including CIEH. A government announcement in the English Devolution White Paper means that councils will no longer be required to seek approval from the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government for larger selective licensing schemes. A new general approval for selective licensing will come into force on 23 December 2024 and will enable local housing authorities to introduce schemes of any size without seeking approval from the Secretary of State. We have repeatedly called for this specific change which will make a significant difference to the ability of local authorities to tackle poor housing conditions and are delighted that the Government has now addressed this important issue. • CIEH has submitted a parliamentary briefing for the report stage of Martyn’s Law which took place this week. Our interest in this Bill continues to be gaining assurance that the event safety expertise of environmental health professionals is used to guarantee its success. CIEH would welcome a commitment from the Government that it will require the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to ensure ongoing communication with other regulators in the safety sector such as Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs). When the proposed legislation takes effect, EHPs working in event health and safety will work alongside the SIA as duty holders in the ongoing management of safe events. There must be an understanding between regulatory agencies including foresight on possible overlap, information sharing protocols, and the clarifying of responsibilities. • Zena Lynch, part of our Housing Advisory Panel and Membership, Learning and the Profession Advisory Group, has reflected on representing CIEH at a special World Health Organisation (WHO) event in Germany. Associate Professor Lynch was invited to be part of the WHO’s three-day European Environment and Health Process meeting in Bonn and among the topics she raised were the workforce challenges faced by the environmental health profession and the need to attract new people to these critical roles. Associate Professor Lynch said she was “honoured” to be invited and said that while the role of an EHP varies considerably across different countries, recruitment challenges were a common issue across the board.
