We use our skills & legal expertise to support people across Coventry & Birmingham to understand and access their rights

About us

We use our skills and legal expertise to support people across Coventry and Birmingham who need our help. Life is full of crises and unexpected life events that cannot be planned for, such as job loss, mental and physical illness, family upheaval, periods of lower earnings and caring responsibilities. This is when it is critical to help people to understand their rights and to support people to have their rights upheld. We advocate for people, challenge unfair decisions, take cases to the highest courts and work in partnerships with other support services. Our vision is a fairer, more just society in which an understanding of rights and their power is embedded within communities.

  • CELC does Christmas! Wishing all of our clients and partners a very restful Christmas break. As well as getting into the festive mood in the office with a best decorated room competition in our new offices in Coventry, we have worked with our partners at Coventry Building Society and Salvation Army to provide presents to 100s of families who wouldn't be able to give their children gifts this Christmas.

  • Really important report by London Funders sheds light on the funding landscape for social welfare advice in London and explores responses to the conundrum of huge demand and limited resources. Our response - activate and embed rights in our community to build a stronger social justice movement bringing together legal and non legal social action. We were delighted to get the opportunity to share in the report what we would like to see from funders to better support law centres and other advice organisations to operate in this way: 💡Be willing to co-fund legal advice and representation that is part funded by legal aid but goes much deeper in helping an individual and a community. This brings benefits of multi-disciplinary working and can create a better impact - it shouldn’t be considered as ‘double funding’. 💡 Invest in core costs that supports leadership, premises, wellbeing and infrastructure development – technological developments are key for the future. 💡 Provide multi-year funding that is impact focussed from a 360 perspective - clients, staff, partners, community and moves away from being output focussed. 💡 Give time to get partnerships off the ground – including funding for work that specialist organisations would not always do to build up relationships especially with grassroots. 💡 Support grantees to say something is not working without fear and value expertise of the sector. 💡 Support rights-based approaches to shift power in communities – give guidance to grantees and help link them up with other projects and learning and funders committed to the same shift. 💡And last but definitely not least - don’t give up on what works!

Social welfare advice is crucial for creating a just, safe, and healthy London. Each year, thousands of Londoners receive support to address financial, social, and legal issues, often preventing problems reaching crisis point. In collaboration with 360Giving and the Greater London Authority, London Funders have mapped the funding landscape of social welfare advice in London. Key findings include:  ▪ Only 26% of known grants were for longer than one year.  ▪ Around 40% of income in the cohort is from government sources, representing £42.7m in grants and £66.9m in contracts.  ▪ 20 funders are responsible for at least 77% of known grant funding received by advice organisations.  ▪ Funders are finding it increasingly difficult to meet demand amid increasing need from communities. The findings show why we need longer-term funding to address the increasingly complex and interconnected needs of those seeking help and why collaboration among funders is so important to meet our shared ambition of challenging poverty in the capital. Barrister at Matrix chambers

👀 Meet Mia, the artist's dummy who occasionally moonlights as a barrister... Talking to secondary school students about #law and #careers is always ✨️uplifting and energising ✨️- so many engaging questions! I was joined at Kenilworth School and Sixth Form by the marvellous Claire Stern from Central England Law Centre - we shared our passion for the law with the almost 2,000 students who came to the careers fair. ⚖️From legal aid to 🌱environmental law, law conversions 📚 to apprenticeships🗄 - we covered it all... Mia is a great ice breaker. Most students at this large comprehensive have never met a lawyer, don't know the difference between a barrister and solicitor and can't easily see their way into the legal world ... But they're keen to try on the wig! And if not, the cupcakes do the trick 🧁. Even one positive conversation can make all the difference and spark a ✨️ #futurelawyer Congratulations to the school careers team for such a great day and to all the exhibitors 👏🏼 #bar #lawcareers #diversity #apprenticeships Matrix Chambers The Bar Council of England and Wales Naomi McAinsh

Fighting for social justice and earlier action on legal rights

At Central England Law Centre our Health Justice Partnership with Coventry Independent Advice Service, embedded in two PCNs in Coventry and funded by the NHS Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board has been running for 18 months supporting over 250 patients. This week we hit a huge milestone we are now projecting over £1 million in missed or denied benefits . 500k of those are already paid to people who are struggling with their health. Access to justice is critical to ensure those facing the greatest inequalities can be well ,mentally and physically. Expect more from us on the other things that are improving for patients as a result of this intervention and our exciting new partnership in Nuneaton.
