#DisruptiveTech 🟣 It is interesting to see the matrix of relationships that could be considered a conflict of interests for some NATO member countries in today's complicated geo-political landscape. Will the new US adminstration seek changes?
❶ Türkiye (Turkey) 🇹🇷
Relationship with Russia: Despite the latest 180 degree turn in Syria, the two countries cooperate on projects like the TurkStream gas pipeline (the Ukrainian gas transit deal expires in 2024, TurkStream is poised to become Russia’s sole remaining pipeline outlet to Europe. Stopping its operations would cut off Russia’s pipeline gas revenue entirely) and the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. Türkiye also purchased the Russian S-400 missile defense system, which caused tensions within NATO.
⚠️ Potential Conflicts of Interest: Türkiye's defense cooperation with Russia, especially the S-400 purchase, has raised concerns about the interoperability of NATO defense systems and the security of shared military technology.
❷ Germany 🇩🇪
Relationship with China: Germany has a strong economic relationship with China, being one of its largest trading partners in Europe (in October, Germany opposed tarrifs against China). German companies have significant investments in China, and the two countries collaborate on various projects, despite Foreign Minister Baerbock's comments at a recent visit to China.
⚠️ Potential Conflicts of Interest: Germany's economic dependence on China can create dilemmas with NATO's strategic stance on issues like human rights and security.
❸ France 🇫🇷
Relationship with China: France engages with China on multiple fronts, including trade, investment, and climate change. French companies are active in the Chinese market, and the two countries have signed numerous bilateral agreements.
⚠️ Potential Conflicts of Interest: France's economic ties with China might influence its position on NATO's policies towards China, especially regarding security and technological competition.
❹ Italy 🇮🇹
Relationship with China: Italy is part of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This partnership includes investments in Italian ports and other infrastructure projects.
⚠️ Potential Conflicts of Interest: Italy's involvement in the BRI could lead to conflicts with NATO's strategic interests, particularly in terms of infrastructure security and economic influence.
❺ Hungary 🇭🇺
Relationship with Russia and China: Hungary maintains close ties with both Russia and China. It has energy agreements with Russia and participates in China's BRI. Hungary has also been a vocal supporter of stronger EU-China relations.
⚠️ Potential Conflicts of Interest: Hungary's relationships with Russia and China can lead to friction within NATO, especially regarding unified responses to security threats and sanctions.
#NATO member states must balance their national interests with collective security commitments.
