As reported in The Herald Scotland at the weekend, we are involved in transforming the old Magnet showroom building in Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street into contemporary, flexible, office space. The building’s façade has been redesigned and the windows are being replaced, allowing for more natural light and natural ventilation; sustainable materials will be used throughout. The ground floor retail units will remain, providing noodles and deserts to complement some great coffee across the street in McLellan Works. Our Managing Director, Mark Alcorn, and Design Director, Jean Camplisson, spoke to scott wright. Jean explained: “It has been called MAGwrx. The first two floors are going to be subdivided into serviced offices, and at the third floor we are going to insert these lovely balconies, which will be really nice for the tenants and actually leave it as a ‘Cat A’ building for a single business. It will have these great views.” The building is situated opposite McLellan Works, where our team have designed tailored workspaces for three very different clients, as well as the reception and other communal areas. Thanks to Andy Cunningham from @mc2-offices with whom we have been working closely to deliver this project on behalf of landlords, Lujo Properties. #workspace #workspacedesign #corporateinteriors #design

The c2:concepts team was engaged to design for the first phase of the refurbishment of Culzean House in Glasgow’s Renfield Street. The historic seven-storey building is being transformed into state-of-the art offices for prospective city centre tenants. This first stage includes a new look reception area, refurbished stairwell, lifts and lobbies. The fourth floor will have individual tenant suites ranging from 400 sq ft to 1,355 sq ft and an amenities hub including external bike stores. The building has a striking façade and new entrance lobby will have a “rich and moody” feel with a feature ceiling, decorative pendant light fittings, timber, planting, soft finishes and seating. The tenant suites on the fourth floor each have a refreshment point and a dedicated meeting room; some can be opened up to create larger suites if required. At the courtyard to the rear of the building there will be secure bicycles lockers. Cyclists will be able to take advantage of amenities hub on the fifth floor which will house spacious male and female shower rooms, lockers with drying facilities and toilets. When it comes to energy supply, a transition plan towards Net Zero Carbon has been developed for the building which will have reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Heat pump technology and waste heat recovery will maximise efficiency. The building’s Energy Performance is further enhanced with low-energy LED lighting, daylighting and occupancy-controlled comfort cooling and heating providing occupants with full control of their own environment as well as their energy usage. Construction work is scheduled for completion at the end of October and we’re really looking forward to seeing our designs becoming a reality. We really enjoyed reading journalist Anna Burnside’s piece on Substack about why she isn’t a fan of working from home. Our team is increasingly being asked to create workspaces that encourage people back to the office. The multiples benefits this brings include brainstorming, incidental information gathering and learning from older, more experienced, colleagues to name just a few. Working environments can be attractive, comfortable places that meet all the needs of contemporary working, complete with video booths, quiet areas and colourful, collaborative spaces. https://lnkd.in/eU6j8Ywt #workspace #office #backtotheoffice

  • Our MD, Mark Alcorn, goes back a long way with designer Matt Cox. They started out together at the GMW Partnership in 1985 and have maintained a close working relationship to this day. As Mark says: "Matt is fabulous designer and I love it when he occasionally (very) posts his projects, which are always tasteful and usually pretty tasty too. "When we first started working together, Matt was in a great team looking after the company brand and graphics. GMW was a groundbreaking architecture firm formed in 1947. Being in the interiors team, we often needed his help with our presentation graphics and so on. "Gollins, Melvin, Ward (as the firm was known initially) was an early adopter of curtain walling systems in its office buildings. "The company created the award-winning Commercial Union and P&O towers in the City of London, the HQ for Barclays Bank in Lombard Street, additions to the Royal Opera House as well as the St Enoch Centre in Glasgow. "When I founded c2:concepts in 2003, Matt was immediately on call to develop our "considered, creative" brand. He continues to work with us to this day, but it should also be mentioned (because it's not on his profile) that he took a spell out of design in the 1990's to work in some top west end restaurants. He is a fantastic cook. "It is therefore not surprising that as well as working with corporates on their brand and communications projects, he also works with well known chefs (no name-dropping here...) and respected food writers, designing their amazing and beautiful books." Take a look at Matt's beautiful design work HERE: https://lnkd.in/e2FCiyeU

Independent Designer of Books and Brands

I’ve written before about the commercial design process and about how it is hopefully always a collaborative one, the happiest outcomes being when everyone involved in a project is proud of that outcome. There are often many layers of approval, decision making and influences and so to negotiate a creative process through these, to reach a final solution that everyone is proud to hang their hat on is incredibly rewarding. With this in mind however it’s perfectly natural for a creative to lament the loss of some thoughts and ideas along the way and occasionally I highlight these thoughts as an illustration of my alternative thinking. The covers here are a case in point. 'Plants for Bees' ended up with a paper wrap and a more ‘commercial’ design approach but I still love this more elegant and restrained slightly academic look. The original preferred visual route for 'Butter, a celebration' was to feature the starting point for all of the recipes, a block of golden butter, with gentle knife strokes adding texture and reference, and for 'The Self Sufficiency Garden' I loved the reference to the Haynes Manuals or IKEA step-by-step guides as the book is a brilliantly thought out pragmatic guide to building your own garden. You can see the final covers on my site...
