I am delighted to share our 2024 Impact Report. This summarises initiatives taken by the bank across the year to support our purpose as ‘good bankers and good citizens’. The strong financial position of the bank and careful stewardship over 350 years has allowed the bank to weather more turbulent times. Most importantly, it allows us to continue to support our customers, our colleagues, and our wider community. Please do read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eye6uMMC #communityimpact

Each year, the partners at C. Hoare & Co. donate up to 10% of the bank’s profits to the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), which makes grants to a wide range of charitable causes. To maximise the GBT’s positive social and environmental impact, it’s crucial to consider both grants and investments as part of the resources that can be used. It calls this concept total portfolio impact. In 2011, 10% of the GBT’s portfolio was committed to impact investments, this rose gradually over the years, reaching 100% in 2019. At the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), the Hoare family uses a philanthropic profiling tool called Care4Most (www.care4most.org) to establish which causes mean the most to family members. Recently, the GBT’s focus on environmental projects intensified, with the funding target rising from 11% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. To maximise its impact, the GBT partnered with Impatience Earth to develop an 'ecosystem granting' strategy. This approach uses multiple smaller grants to address the interconnected nature of environmental issues, supporting solutions from the planting and preservation of seagrass to regenerative agriculture. The Golden Bottle Trust (GBT) was established in 1985 to further the philanthropic aims of the Hoare family. This approach mirrors our business ethos – prioritising long-term decisions and fostering trusted relationships. The GBT likes to give unrestricted funding; it recognises that the charities it works with are the experts in their fields and trusts them to allocate funds to deliver the best outcomes. One of the GBT’s longstanding partnerships is with a grant-making charity called The Fore. The Fore provides grants to small charities, and has had a huge impact, with 50% of the charities in its pilot programme now operating nationally. It has used unrestricted grants from the GBT to fund core costs, allowing it to build and scale the infrastructure required to deliver its operations. Each year, the partners of C. Hoare & Co. donate up to 10% of the bank’s profits to the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), which makes grants to a wide range of charitable causes. The top 300 foundation grant-makers in the UK donated £3.7bn in 2021-22. Although the GBT’s contribution to this is comparatively small, the Hoare family believes it can play an important role through funding early-stage initiatives that prove a model; this allows larger resources to follow once the approach has been validated. An example of catalytic funding is the GBT’s support of Project Limitless, a charity set up to provide children with soft prosthetic limbs. The family could see how these custom designed limbs allow children to do so much more than is possible with standard NHS prosthetics and was delighted to be able to fund a ladder of pilot projects which allowed Project Limitless to demonstrate the success of their approach and scale activities accordingly. We are delighted to announce the publication of the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT) annual report. We have chosen to structure this year’s annual report slightly differently – in a series of six thought pieces which provide an insight into the way we do things. They cover topics ranging from impact investment to environmental philanthropy and tell the story of how we have evolved our approach, while also sharing about the tools we use for our giving. We designed the report so that each section could stand on its own, meaning people can read the sections that interest them most. I hope that some of our approaches can be useful for others in their philanthropy. https://lnkd.in/etX8YYSU #Legacy #GoldenBottleTrust #HoareFamily #CharitableGiving #Philanthropy #Totalportfolioimpact
