We are a leading wildlife charity working across the UK to conserve butterflies, moths and our environment.
About us
Butterfly Conservation is a leading charity and the world’s largest organisation dedicated to the conservation of butterflies and moths. Our mission is to halt and then reverse the decline of butterflies and moths. By achieving this goal we can help create a healthier environment in which we all can live. Butterflies and moths are a vital part of our wildlife heritage and they are valuable indicators of the health of our environment. Our surveys reveal that they continue to decline at a rate that is faster than most other well-documented groups of plants and animals. Our work will benefit other wildlife and the ecosystems upon which all life depends. Butterfly Conservation’s research advises people how to conserve and restore habitats. We run programmes for more than 100 threatened species and are involved in conserving hundreds of sites and reserves. To find out more about our work and how you can get involved or become a member please visit www.butterfly-conservation.org.

We welcome the government’s announcement to legislate on permanently banning toxic neonicotinoid pesticides Butterfly Conservation’s Chief Executive, Julie Williams said “We thank the Minister for listening to the concerns of Butterfly Conservation’s members and supporters. However, the current process for assessing emergency authorisations is clearly not fit for purpose and poses an on-going risk to butterflies and moths until that legislation comes into force.” Read more on the announcement here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ewDfpxNx #ButterflyEmergency

📢 NEW PhD opportunity: Impacts of light pollution, and other drivers, on UK moth communities and associated plant pollination New evidence shows diverse impacts of artificial light across most life stages and key behaviours of moths (Boyes et al. 2021), with light pollution reducing nocturnal pollinator visits to flowers by 62% (Knop et al. 2017). This PhD will help address key evidence gaps to provide critical scientific insights to better inform policy and practices to safeguard pollinating moths. For full details and to apply 👉 https://lnkd.in/e5AXeDh8 Closing date for applications is Monday 20 January 2025 University of Reading Natural History Museum 📷: Phil Sterling

Happy #MothMonday! You might spot this moth in orbit this month 🛰️ The Satellite (Eupsilia transversa) can be found in areas of woodland and scrub from October through to April. This long-lived moth does not truly hibernate, active on mild nights throughout the winter. Caterpillars feed on deciduous trees but also have a carnivorous tendency towards larvae of other species! 🐛😯 📷: Iain H Leach, Patrick Clement #MothsMatter
