About us
The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) is the only organisation that represents and protects the interests of builders merchants, plumbing, heating, roofing, decorative and timber merchants and their suppliers. We are the authoritative voice for the building materials distribution sector, conveying the views and issues that face merchants and suppliers, to the widest possible audience. The BMF is the active hub of merchant and supplier activity in the UK, working closely with allied industry groups and regulatory bodies such as trading standards and planning departments, to ensure that issues affecting member merchants and suppliers are tackled promptly and effectively. The BMF is an active lobbyist with local and central government in England, Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland, and has an impressive track record of achievements. We are totally dedicated to the interests of our members, providing training and professional and knowledgeable support, as well as organising key events where members can meet and exchange ideas with fellow merchants, suppliers, and leading industry figures. We work continually to ensure that merchants survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive and fast-developing market.

As part of our campaign asking for Government to reconsider its planned changes to inheritance tax, the BMF is backing Family Business UK’s letter, which has been sent to the Chancellor calling for a formal consultation on BPR and APR. The letter - of which John Newcomb, CEO of the BMF, is one of the signatories - is available to view at https://bit.ly/4iD28KA We are among 32 trade and industry bodies named, which collectively represent 160,000 UK family firms and farms. The move comes as the BMF sent its own letter to the Prime Minister, as well as the Chancellor and the Secretary of State of Business and Trade at the end of November on the situation. We believe the proposals surrounding Business Property Relief from the Autumn Budget will deliver a significant impact on the future of private and family-owned businesses in BMF membership, with some owners likely to defer or cut back on investment decisions, stock and staff. The BMF is actively pushing for a solution to this matter, and it remains a top priority for us. Trade Associations signing the letter include: Family Business UK, Associated Independent Stores Ltd, Association of Convenience Stores, British Allied Trades Federation, British Beer & Pub Association, British Coatings Federation, British Holiday & Home Parks Association, British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA), Bira - British Independent Retailers Association, British Marine, The British Sandwich & Food to Go Association, Café Life Association, Commercial Interiors UK, CPA - Construction Plant-hire Association, , Craft Bakers Association, Electrical Contractor’s Association, Farm Retail Association, Guild of Fine Food, Historic Houses, Horticultural Trades Association, Hospitality UK, Home Builders Federation, THE INDEPENDENT FAMILY BREWERS OF BRITAIN, National Association Of Funeral Directors, National Body Repair Association, NFU (National Farmers' Union), PAPA - The Pizza, Pasta & Italian Food Association, Recruitment & Employment Confederation, UK Chamber of Shipping, Wine and Spirit Trade Association
