Truly inspiring work at Pikes Peak, Adriaan - what a remarkable project! Great to see how our Bramble CFD platform supported this incredible engineering journey.
A LinkedIn update that’s a little past due but one that I’m also very excited to share. Exactly one year ago, I started my dream job as the lead engineer for a Pikes Peak International Hill Climb effort. The owner had reached out with a unique idea for a lightweight, aero-focused car to conquer the mountain with. I didn’t need to be asked twice and a hectic 6 months followed. The starting point for our bid was an Empire Wraith, which is a small open-wheel car designed for more traditional hill climb events. Modifying it for the unlimited division of Pikes Peak gave us close to a blank slate, but with so little time until the event, our focus was on developing aero for the new (non-existent) rule set. It helped that the starting point with the Wraith was an aero package designed by Willem H Toet. It was also a huge privilege to have Willem join our effort as a consultant. Working with him was an absolute pleasure, and his expertise and contributions were invaluable to the project. In the little time available, I had to fully reverse-engineer the Wraith, make it rules-compliant, engineer a new aero package, and figure out how to manufacture the numerous updates. My efforts were matched by some of the most talented fabricators I’ve worked with, leading to a build that we were all quite proud of. The final car was also a testament to the owner’s original vision and technical insight. After many late nights, we made it to the event and passed the technical inspection with zero issues. We then qualified 6th overall and were on pace for a top 5 finish before an unfortunate DNF. There aren’t many events where a small team can compete with factory-backed teams and professional drivers, but that’s what made the event, and the results we achieved, so special. As a car guy and an engineer, it was a dream project. It was made even better by the people I got to work with while making it a reality. We also couldn’t have made the tight timeline without Willem’s insight, my friend Pahul Sapra’s help with the body design, and the efficiency of the Bramble CFD platform. We’re hoping to return for the 2025 PPIHC and we’ve been working hard on a host of updates that I’ll hopefully be able to share soon!
