How much do we, #human beings, weight in terms of biomass, compare to #plants, other #animals, all #biodiversity... and all we have created? Have a look at this Johns Hopkins Hospital animation: https://biocubes.net/ That being said, what can we do to decrease our footprint? A good news story for a change! Land snails, thought to be extinct in the wild, have been found by conservationists, bred in captivity and now released onto the Atlantic Deserta Grande island close to Madeira. It is thought they were wiped out by invasive species such as rats, mice and goats introduced to the island by humans. https://lnkd.in/efvrws4J

Some useful information here on TNFD in the UK:
🚨 New resource on UK policy direction on TNFD 🚨 Are you interested in the UK’s policy direction on nature-related disclosure? Did you know the Bank of England has a new remit to consider nature risks? Or that other UK financial regulators including the PRA and FCA have until Jan 1st 2025 (<2 weeks!) to demonstrate their own action on nature? The Green Finance Institute and Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) UK Consultation Group has developed a short briefing on the current policy positioning of the UK public sector. It explores: 🎯 What nature targets has the UK government committed to and is there a strategy to achieve them? 🧾 How might nature feature in the UK’s Sustainability Disclosure Regulation (SDR)? 🏛️ What responsibility do the UK’s financial regulators have regarding nature? Check out the summaries below and the full resource here - https://lnkd.in/eDc9v8sS #nature #TNFD #naturefinance #naturedisclosure #naturepositive #sustainablefinance #biodiversity Hannah M. Visions are fundamentally important to inspire transformative #change. The lastest #IPBES reports are a must read: - the Transformative Change Assessment https://lnkd.in/dab8yugv and https://lnkd.in/dMAFY63M - and #Nexus Assessment https://lnkd.in/eiJzeBrv #Education is key to understand the interconnections and how to address them. Today marks 75 years since the introduction of the “1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act”, which enacted in law the protection of large areas of British countryside, as well as preserving the right of the public to access those areas. Read more about it from the Natural England blog here: https://lnkd.in/euseDXs9 To understand the need for preservation of our natural landscapes for both human and other species, check out the upcoming Biodiversity Colllage workshops in January: https://lnkd.in/e8g29xPQ

This is a great example of how actions by members of the public can help prevent the spread of an invasive species. Co-author of a study by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) , Prof Helen Roy said, “The contributions of volunteers to citizen science initiatives such as the Asian Hornet Watch app are inspiring. The yellow-legged hornet is a voracious predator and has caused notable losses of honeybees in parts of Europe, and we predict there would be major impacts to wild pollinators in the UK if it establishes here.” https://lnkd.in/eJhtuqfV

Our human activities have spread species where they have not evolved to exist, often leading to uncontrollable population growth, as there are no predators. This is one of drivers of biodiversity loss that we consider in the Biodiversity Collage workshop. If you are interested in attending, we have several public workshops coming up in and around London in the next few weeks: https://lnkd.in/e8g29xPQ
At #COP16Colombia, Parties made a critical decision to address #InvasiveAlienSpecies – one of the top drivers of biodiversity loss! New guidelines emphasize international cooperation, capacity-building and technical support for developing countries. With plans for new databases, improved cross-border trade regulations and e-commerce coordination, Parties aim to close gaps in managing invasive species risks and align with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) goals.
