Together with dedicated local conservation volunteers, we’re sowing enough native wildflower seeds in the next few weeks to create new and better homes and food sources for bees, butterflies and other insects on over 14 acres of land across the borough – that’s about 11 football fields or 85 tennis courts. This will help to restore wildlife-rich chalk grasslands, which are very rare and fragile habitats that were once common in the south of the borough. With the help and support of Natural Basingstoke volunteers, the work will create spaces for those species to thrive once more and for everyone to enjoy. Our Rangers started this off at Overton Hill two weeks ago, spreading thousands of native wildflower seeds across the meadow after they used a tractor to prepare the soil for planting. Over 30 kilograms of these wildflower seeds were harvested from our green spaces before they were dried, sorted and analysed by local company Wildflower Turf, based in Overton. We also added extra seeds for key indicator species and plants that provide food for butterflies as the analysis showed we had few of these in our harvest. As we kick off International Fraud Awareness Week, we are reaffirming our commitment to protecting the UK's public funds and services from fraud. Public sector fraud costs the UK billions annually, affecting essential public services. We work collaboratively with the Public Sector Fraud Authority, across wider government, and with external partners to find and prevent fraud. So far this year, through our counter-fraud measures, we have identified almost £60,000 in fraud and error and prevented further losses of almost £70,000. Find out more about our work to counter fraud on our website: https://lnkd.in/eerucXJ9 #FraudWeek

EU citizens on the borough’s electoral register will receive an email or letter from the council to explain changes to voting rights as part of The Elections Act 2022. Residents affected by the changes will be asked to confirm their details so we can check if they are still eligible to vote in local council and police and crime commissioner elections. Anyone who has consented to receiving electoral registration updates by email will receive this request by email from electoral.services@basingstoke.gov.uk. This is not a scam. The quickest way to confirm eligibility is by confirming online at https://lnkd.in/dZ4t_uip Details on how to log in will be included in the letter or email. Alternatively, a form that can be returned to the council will also be included in letters and emails. This is separate to the annual electoral registration canvass that residents may have already responded to. For more information about the review, visit https://lnkd.in/e_xkTEQg
