According to NHS England, almost one out of every eight phone calls made under Martha's Rule has led to a potentially life-saving change of treatment. The new patient safety procedure is being used in 143 hospitals, and out of 573 calls, almost half have prompted an urgent review by critical care staff. [https://lnkd.in/ePa4QFik] Martha's Rule gives patients and their families more power to seek a second opinion when they feel they aren’t being heard by their current doctor. 🔗 Read more in our blog: https://lnkd.in/eV-qqgHi #PatientSafety #MarthasRule #MedicalNegligence [Image description: a female dressed in blue medical scrubs, wearing a face mask and blue vinyl gloves, writing on a clipboard]

We want all our staff to feel they belong in the firm and can come to work as their true selves. That’s why we’ve introduced a brand-new initiative: ‘Belonging at Barcan+Kirby’. So far, we’ve identified four key areas where staff may feel disconnected and marginalised: 1. Neurodiversity 2. Religion 3. Menopause 4. Trans and non-binary We have therefore put some specific measures in place to address this disconnect and highlight how we can offer flexibility, allyship and understanding. This includes: - New policies such as a ‘Transgender and Non-Binary Inclusion at Work’ policy. - Adding pronouns to email signatures. - Joining the Muslim Employment Charter and making several changes as part of that, e.g. providing dedicated prayer spaces in all offices, ensuring firm events provide Halal food options and installing Iota jugs/WuduMates in all offices. - Providing internal training on how to support neurodivergent colleagues and clients. - Reviewing our recruitment process to ensure it's inclusive. - Delivering training on menopause and developing a menopause support programme. ... And much more! But our work doesn’t stop here. Our EDI+B Committee continues to explore other marginalised groups for inclusion in the Belonging at Barcan+Kirby project. ‘The Guide to Family Court Proceedings for those who have experienced domestic abuse’ has been launched today to coincide with the conclusion of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This free guide was developed by the Domestic Abuse subgroup of the Local Family Justice Board (led by District Judge Gareth Webb), which Charlotte Wait in our Domestic Abuse team is proud to be a member of. It was developed by various specialists, including legal counsel, advocates and trauma specialists, to support victims of domestic abuse as they navigate the court process. This will also be an incredibly useful resource for our domestic abuse lawyers and the many other professionals who support victims. You can view and download the guide below ⬇️ #FamilyCourt #DomesticAbuse #16Days

If you're an employer, do you know you have a duty to prevent sexual harassment at work? A new duty was recently incorporated into the Equality Act for employers to anticipate scenarios that could subject workers to sexual harassment and take action to prevent it. 🔗 Find out more in our blog: https://lnkd.in/dhp2Vddz #UKEmpLaw #EmploymentLaw [Image description: a blurred image of a group of professionals in an office meeting room, seated around a table with laptops and documents]
