As we approach the end of 2024, B2Space is looking forward to the many projects planned for the new year. A key part of our work involves designing and manufacturing critical components and systems that must withstand the extreme conditions of the stratosphere. Thorough testing is essential to ensure successful performance and mission completion. This week, our team returned to the Instituto Universitario de Microgravedad "Ignacio Da Riva" (IDR/UPM) at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid to conduct thermal vacuum chamber tests on several valves. This step, along with extensive flight testing, helps ensure our systems are ready for the challenges of a stratospheric flight. Our skilled engineers, Flavia and David, led the testing of the valves, where both tests achieved the expected results. The goal was to simulate a complete balloon flight, subjecting the valves to a range of conditions from ambient pressure and temperature to the cold temperatures of the upper atmosphere. A key part of the testing involved a demanding evaluation at -80 degrees Celsius (ISA -20), where the systems performed well. This rigorous assessment improves the reliability of our valve systems by ensuring they can withstand the harsh stratospheric environment for extended periods. Since the late 19th century, balloons have been a valuable tool for scientific exploration. Scientists have used balloons to gather data on wind patterns, greenhouse gas concentrations, aerosols, and radiation. Balloons offer the advantage of drifting with the wind, allowing for extended observation periods and the collection of air samples. This capability has been helpful in studying the ozone layer, monitoring greenhouse gas levels, and investigating complex atmospheric phenomena. As space technology has advanced, balloons have continued to play a crucial role. They serve as a cost-effective platform for testing satellite components and instruments, such as star trackers, thermal cameras, and solar cells, under near-space conditions. Using helium, our zero-pressure balloons can reach an altitude of 37km, and the duration of the flight can be anywhere from a few hours to a few days. During inflation, the balloon is filled with helium gas in stages, ensuring optimal performance and stability. We have had a productive week engaging with the space community. We attended the 1st International Symposium on Small Launchers and Spaceports, where we had three days of insightful discussions on the future of small launch vehicles and spaceports. Our “Meet the Company” presentation generated interest from European Space Agency - ESA, UK Space Agency, and other key players. Additionally, we participated in a panel discussion at the 9th Dual-Use Technologies Forum, focusing on supporting startups and SMEs in integrating into European supply chains.
