Only one week left to donate to our appeal on BBC Lifeline! One in five children and young people in England has a probable mental health disorder, and the number of children and young people in contact with mental health services has more than doubled since 2018. We’re here to close that gap. By taking a holistic approach - led by the latest evidence and guided by lived experience – we expand our understanding, develop better care and equip all who impact children and young people’s lives with the tools to support their mental health. With this approach, and your support, we will ensure all children, young people and families get the right support at the right time. Watch and donate to our appeal to help us provide this essential support. Your help will change children and young people’s lives across the UK. And there’s never been a better time to donate as, thanks to our generous match-funders, your donation could have double the impact and help us raise even more funds. Watch our appeal and donate now: https://orlo.uk/1iFjG #BBCLifeline #AnnaFreud #MentalHealthCharity #MentalHealthMatters #ChildrensMentalHealth #YoungPeoplesMentalHealth #YouthMentalHealth

About us
We're a mental health charity and we’ve been supporting children and young people for over 70 years. We listen to and learn from their diverse voices, and integrate this with learnings from our science and practice to develop and deliver mental health care. This holistic approach has world-changing potential – our training, schools support, networks, partnerships and resources equip those who impact children and young people’s lives with the knowledge and skills to support their mental health. We believe mental wellbeing is the foundation from which children and young people achieve their potential. By continually expanding our understanding and translating it into practice – grounded in science and guided by children and young people – we can ensure they get the right support at the right time.

Our office will be closed and our projects and services will have reduced capacity from 23 December to 2 January. The holiday period can be hard - especially if you're struggling with your mental health or are supporting someone who is. If you need urgent clinical support, remember you can contact your GP surgery, local A&E or NHS 111 or 999 in the UK, or your emergency services in your country. And if you need someone to talk to, don't forget you can: 💙 Text AFC to 85258: https://orlo.uk/j6JFA 💙 Head to MindMeeting OÜ website for resources and emotional support: https://orlo.uk/1LmNu 💙 Call Samaritans on 116 123: https://orlo.uk/8goFt #AnnaFreud #MentalHealthCharity #MentalHealthMatters #ChildrensMentalHealth #YoungPeoplesMentalHealth #YouthMentalHealth

Just some of the things we learned from our @corccentral Forum in November: - There are many emotional triggers and associated burdens experienced by adolescent school pupils with diagnoses of ADHD, autism or both. - We need to challenge and address the current assumptions that are made of those with autism or ADHD, and instead understand the high emotional burden these young people can experience. - For them, it’s the need to address the environments and teacher/peer interactions on them, which is having an impact on their ill-mental health and/or their lack of school attendance. Yet the current approach is that these individuals are trying to ‘be fixed’. - Being able to understand and hear from these young people is crucial in ensuring an informed approach. - It's so important to have co-produced development of an outcome measure for children and young people who are neurodivergent. This is particularly relevant for our evaluations that focus on programmes supporting children and young people who are at risk of not staying in education, and those who may be affected by violence. A guest highlighted that she “especially liked the use of the young people’s art/pictures shown alongside these research findings; it was so meaningful to see the child’s representation of how they are experiencing their environment”. We're proud to be a co-founder of #BeeWell, which is calling for a national wellbeing measurement to be part of the new Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill. Better, standardised data to inform local actions is key to building the wellbeing of the next generation. We’ll be following the Bill over the next few weeks as it progresses through parliament...
National wellbeing measurement is the missing piece from the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill. We welcome the publication of the Bill, placing children’s wellbeing at the heart of government. We mustn’t miss this opportunity to measure children’s wellbeing, listen to their voices and act on what they tell us. This government has quite rightly said that “nothing says more about the state of a nation than the wellbeing of its children.” The challenge at the moment is that we have no way nationally of truly understanding children’s wellbeing, or what can be done to improve it. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We’re calling on the government to introduce a national wellbeing measurement programme for England as a key amendment to be tabled as the Bill progresses. As a first step they should launch a time-limited cross-sector working group to guide the roll out of wellbeing measurement, as recommended in the Pro Bono Economics report, “Charting a happier course for England’s children”. Our team of Young Champions, including the brilliant Thea, work with us to ensure that their experiences of mental health and as young people help shape the work we do. Anna Freud wants all schools to be mentally healthy. This means creating a school culture that prioritises belonging and relationships, where every student feels included and supported and where staff and families work in partnership. Help us to continue our vital work for young people. If you can, watch our BBC Lifeline Appeal and donate to help us provide this essential support. And there’s never been a better time to donate as, thanks to our generous match-funders, your donation could have double the impact and help us raise even more funds.
