After warming up with hot chocolate, we shared a lovely dinner, exchanged Secret Santa gifts, and wrapped up the day with a fantastic quiz filled with laughter and cheer. Consultant at Akeso | MCA Rising Star Winner 2024 I Completing an MA in Leadership and Management

Over the last 2 days I have attended the The King's Fund "Listening to People and Communities" Virtual Conference. In Darzi's Report, he noted that patient voice was not loud enough. The key message which emerged from the conference was that: "It is not that the patient voice isn't loud enough, it is that the system is wearing headphones." With this in mind, I wanted to share some of my key takeaways. These revolve around how we must truly listen and hear what patients and communities need in order to thrive. 1. Hearing vs listening: hearing is the passive collecting of sound, whereas listening is the active engagement to understand what is being said. 2. Patient voice needs to be the driver:  Projects and change should start with listening to the patient and community feedback alongside lived experience. This should not be an add-on at the end to projects. 3. Data has a really important role in supporting the evidence-base for commissioning change. 4. Building trust  between patients and health and social care organisations is incredibly important - a key strategy for achieving this is implementing regular feedback loops and follow-ups after patients share their experiences. 5. The Voluntary Sector  are critical to the eco-system of co-production, and are often the closest and most trusted service for patients and communities. One of the greatest motivations in my work is ensuring that patient voice is at the heart of decision making across health and social care. Therefore, it was incredibly inspiring to be in a digital room filled with people all striving toward that same goal: placing patient and community voices at the center of the #NHS10YearPlan At the conference we were presented with a challenge, and I wanted to share this with you all as something to reflect on: 📣 What can you do in your role working in and with the health and social care system to be an advocate for patients and communities at the tables you sit at?📣 #PatientEngagement #PatientVoice #CommunityEngagement

Good article by the BBC exploring the potential of wearable health tech in healthcare. While the benefits are clear—such as promoting self-care and providing real-time insights—the piece also raises important concerns about over-monitoring and unintended consequences. https://lnkd.in/dwJUSqSQ This ties closely to an article I co-wrote with Dr India P. and Nick Thorn at Akeso, where we explored how to best harness wearable health tech. In our piece, we address key challenges such as interoperability, data privacy, equitable access, patient engagement, and AI integration, offering insights into how these technologies can be effectively implemented. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eBCeCYeA

🗣️Have you heard about Health on the High Street? Health on the High Street could be the answer our healthcare system has been looking for. The initiative supports innovative projects to move traditional health services out of hospital settings and into the heart of communities, bringing footfall back to the high-street and making care more accessible to patients. This aligns with the government's vision to shift the focus of care into the community, as seen in Darzi's Report and with Labour's Neighbourhood Teams Manifesto. Over the last few months, Akeso has supported Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in designing and developing a new model of care that relocates services including Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Rheumatology and Orthotics to a shopping-centre based outpatient facility. This brings care closer to home, and in doing so realises significant benefits for patients, the Trust and the wider community. As part of the development of a Full Business Case for the new service model, the project team identified: 💵 £3.1 million annual savings 📈 Increased service utilisation from 77% to 90% 🛑 Reduced missed appointments by 3% ⬇️ 20% reduction in unnecessary follow-up appointments ✅ Improvement of patient experience To find out more about Health on the High Street, read our case study here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUBrvQvv #TeamAkeso #HealthontheHighStreet #OutofHospital #HighStreet

With time to reflect further on the Darzi report in the context of the recent Autumn Budget, it is clear the NHS faces enduring challenges to achieve the 2% productivity gains expected alongside the increased health budget and capital funding. Nonetheless, Akeso believe targeted reforms can pave the way to a more sustainable, preventative, and community-focused system. Our Managing Partner, Sarah Pinto-Duschinsky, has identified the five key shifts required to shape a future-proofed NHS that meets the evolving needs of patients, staff, and our society. 👉 Explore the five key shifts summarise below 🔗 Read Sarah's full article here: https://lnkd.in/eGV9s7V7 #AutumnBudget #NHS10YearPlan

🌍 World Diabetes Day: Advancing Prevention, Treatment, and Patient-Centred Care This #WorldDiabetesDay, Akeso stands alongside healthcare professionals and communities dedicated to reducing the impact of diabetes. With over 5.6 million people in the UK affected and rates continuing to rise, innovative approaches are more vital than ever. New technologies, such as Continuous Glucose Monitoring and insulin pumps, are transforming the management of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. These advancements pave the way for the automated artificial pancreas, a promising step towards better glucose regulation and improved quality of life for those with Type 1 Diabetes. Preventing Type 2 Diabetes also calls for action at a population level to address lifestyle factors. Diabetes UK recently identified five key areas for the Autumn Budget 2024 to focus on, including policy changes such as targeted sugar and fat taxes to influence supermarket buying practices. Additionally, a recent University of York study showed that around £6.2 billion is spent annually on treating preventable complications of diabetes, underscoring the importance of early detection and prevention initiatives like the NHS Diabetes Prevention Program. At Akeso, we’re committed to supporting healthcare systems in adopting these advancements to empower patients and reduce health disparities. Together, let’s make strides in diabetes care and prevention for a healthier future. 💙 #TeamAkeso #WorldDiabetesDay #Prevention #T1DM #T2DM #CGM

✨ Making an Impact as a Young Consultant - Reflections from the Young MCA Event ✨ Attending the recent Young MCA event, I had the privilege of learning from speakers Kate Bamford, Emma Cooper, and Regina Quartey on how to navigate and make an impact in consulting careers at an early stage. 🔹 Kate Bamford (EY): Purpose Kate emphasised the importance of finding purpose in our careers and the projects we deliver. She encouraged us to ask critical questions like, “What is the purpose of this project?” and “What’s the real problem we’re solving?” Additionally, Kate shared insights from Daniel Pink’s Motivation Theory, reminding us to understand our intrinsic motivators and recognise what and who energises us. I resonated with this, believing that when we centre our work around purpose and truly understand what motivates us, we can achieve the most meaningful outcomes both personally and professionally. 🔹 Emma Cooper (Deloitte): Building Trusting Relationships Emma introduced the “Trust Equation”: Trust = (Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy) / Self-Orientation. Key takeaways included: / Credibility: Establish credibility from the outset. / Reliability: Ensure reliability through thorough preparation. / Intimacy: Cultivate genuine relationships with clients that allow for vulnerability and openness. / Self-Orientation: Prioritise active listening and show up authentically, whilst presenting yourself with confidence. I loved the discussion this talk opened. Building genuine and trusting relationships, whether with patients or clients, has always been very important to me and is something I look forward to continuing and strengthening in my work at Akeso. 🔹 Regina Quartey (PwC, Mainstream): Expanding Your Sphere of Influence Regina encouraged us as young consultants to be bold, stay committed, and step out of our comfort zones to build strong connections. She spoke about the importance of identifying personal stakeholders and strategically mapping out our networks, whilst making new connections to expand our sphere of influence and open doors to new opportunities. I found Regina’s journey truly inspiring — from her experiences in foster care to leading the digital Brexit strategy at just 24, and later setting up her own consulting business (Mainstream) alongside working at PwC (whilst being a mum!) Thank you so much to the speakers, host Mona Aziz, and all the organisers at the Young MCA for a session full of valuable lessons! Tamzen Isacsson It’s encouraging to see how purpose, trust, and networking can sculpt our paths in consulting. #TeamAkeso #ManagementConsulting #Leadership #YoungMCA #ProfessionalDevelopment #Networking
