Be Inspired by New Writing This Winter | Meet the Winners of the Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. Congratulations to Nicholas Petty and Toby Campion! Nicholas' piece 'Close Your Eyes' is our Short Fiction winner. Dr Marl'ene Edwin SFHEA, Chair of the Short Fiction jury, commented on the remarkable suspense created by the story's opening, "From the very start, readers felt a kind of quietness that was actually quite menacing and sinister. There’s a very quiet pacing before one realises what they are going to get into." Toby's work 'When someone asks if I think I’ll have children I whip out the Tarot' is our Poetry winner. Chris McCabe, Chair of the Poetry jury, noted: "Rather than giving a full picture, the poem is instead a series of reflections from word-mirrors, allowing the reader to complete its meaning for themselves and to see what they want reflected back to them." A huge congratulations to our winners and the 60 exceptional shortlisted writers who are published in the Aesthetica Creative Writing Award Anthology 2025. We are honoured to showcase such a fantastic selection of writing in this year's book. These evocative pieces challenge us to pause, reflect and connect – reminding us of the resilience and strength of the human spirit. We are proud to announce that Ornella Mutoni's powerful documentary 'The Things We Don't Say' funded and supported by the Listening Pitch, an Audible and Aesthetica initiative to support film production, is now available to watch on The Guardian. The film premiered at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival to a full house. 'The Things We Don't Say' follows a group of young adults as they confront the wounds left by the 1994 Rwandan genocide. In a supportive, group healing session, they tell their stories, learning to lean on each other and find the courage to break the cycle of trauma. Ornella's film highlights the significance of speaking and being heard in healing intergenerational pain: "If the silence continues and the effects of trauma are not tended to, what happens to the next generation? When pain is concealed, can it erupt into violence?" The Listening Pitch, a partnership between Aesthetica and Audible, is an exploration of the cinematic of the unheard. In the past 5 years the fund has supported 8 documentaries that have gone on to screen at Sundance, SXSW, be shortlisted for IDFA Awards, as well as gain distribution through the Guardian. We will open for applications early next year and will be looking for pitches to greenlight and bring to the big screen. Congratulations to Ornella and her team for making an important and significant film. #AsSeenInPrint | Sense of Detachment Bootsy Holler (b.1969) is best-known for her work as a portraitist, beginning with intimate depictions of herself and friends at the centre of Seattle’s pivotal music scene during the early 1990s. Her series 'Without Words', however, sidesteps into conceptualism. It is introspective; a way of making sense of personal thoughts and feelings. "The spark came from an illuminating moment in Savannah, Georgia, when I found myself alone in the humid night air. I walked to the railing and looked out to see my body face down in the pool below. I didn’t know it then, but the feeling of detachment in that moment would follow me through the next few years. What might have started as despair now represents hope."
