To commemorate International Mountain Day, our research fellow Biraj Adhikari will be speaking about the importance of intergenerational accountability for mountain communities in Nepal 🏔️ ⛰️. This brings together vital aspects of our research, highlighting the centrality of accountability in relation to climate change impacts. Biraj Adhikari will share stories from his own research in Nepali mountains. We're very pleased to share our work on a UK Research and Innovation project that brought together interdisciplinary experts to create 'The Floating City' - an innovative game exploring the concept of time and the climate crisis ⌛ Future Leader Fellows Susannah Fisher, Panagiotis Papadopoulos and Peter Bray, in collaboration with arts charity Coney, brought their respective practices together to co-create this unique game. Players work together to sustain an archipelago facing climate challenges, critically examining power dynamics, knowledge sharing and decision-making in climate adaptation. Last week, we hosted a successful test session with academics, practitioners, and game designers, exploring the game's potential to engage diverse audiences with complex climate issues 📢. Great conversations at #DCdays2024 during #COP29. Many thanks to #IEEEYP, #WorldBank and #IIED for co-hosting. It was an opportunity to critically think about the ‘just’ in the just transition with a diverse group including early career researchers, the Azerbaijan state-owned oil company, Indigenous People and a few negotiators. Is the just transition a bit over-used, a bit stretched as a concept? Perhaps. To re-enliven it, we need more and better civic engagement in place-based politics. This means inclusive participation and for external funders and researchers to forget one size fits all approaches, rather we must meet countries and communities where they are on their journey with the Paris Agreement. Last week, we were thrilled to host the UCL Student Sustainability Forum with Students' Union UCL President Goksu Danaci. UCL’s #COP16 and #COP29 team, and over 80 students came together to discuss urgent climate challenges, including the new climate finance goal, global biodiversity loss, and climate policy in multiple countries.  Highlights from the forum:  📢 Goksu led an insightful discussion with some of UCL’s delegates for COP, including:   - Professor Mark Maslin, Professor of Earth System Sciences, and Pro-Vice Provost for the Grand Challenge of the Climate Crisis  - Professor Priti Parikh FICE, Professor of Infrastructure Engineering and International Development and Director of The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction  - Dr Izzy Bishop, Lecturer (Teaching) in Ecology  - Dr Jon Barnes, Research Fellow in climate change adaptation, Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction 💡 Roundtable discussions:   Students then had the valuable opportunity to participate in roundtable discussions with the panelists, and provide critical feedback on themes of climate justice, climate finance, youth engagement, the future of climate, biodiversity, as well as universities’ roles in addressing global sustainability challenges.  💬 Student perspective:   Anoushka Jain, student at UCL and COP representative for the UK Youth Climate Coalition wrapped up the event by sharing her journey into sustainability.  Next week, Goksu and our COP29 team will be taking students’ concerns to the global stage in Baku, Azerbaijan. Our latest article in today's Kathmandu Post emphasizes why this year's COP29 is particularly crucial for building a new era of climate finance through the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). It's time to move beyond empty promises and commitments to real outcomes. Developing nations, disproportionately impacted by climate change, require significant investment to adapt and build resilience. The NCQG must ensure: Increased and predictable financial flows: Meeting existing pledges is not enough. New and innovative mechanisms for mobilizing resources are essential. Accessible funding: Streamlined processes and transparency are vital to ensure that finance reaches those who need it most. Focus on adaptation: While mitigation remains critical, adaptation measures are equally important for vulnerable communities facing the immediate consequences of a changing climate. But finance is only part of the equation. Accountability is key.
