Establishing multi-agency child protection teams: what does this mean for education settings? 👩🏻💼 These teams, called MACPTs for short, will be established by the three safeguarding partners (local authority, police and healthcare). The teams are their collective responsibility to establish and run. 👨🏾⚕️ They will support the local authority and require reporting from them on child protection. 👩🏫 The MACPT will include at least one person with education experience. The MACPT will be a group of child protection experts with a minimum level of child protection experience and qualifications. 🔢 There will be one or more MACPT in each local authority. This is likely to come into force in 2027. Prior to that, legislation needs to be revised, including Working Together to Safeguard Children. The Government will evaluate the results of the Family First for Children Pathfinder programme in 2026.

Child and adult safeguarding The terms 'significant harm' and 'serious harm': some thoughts. When I'm training staff who work to safeguard both children and adults as part of their role I normally use the term 'significant harm' for children (under 18s) and 'serious harm' for adults. These terms come from legislative documents. Reading the recent publication from The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel, it's important to note that they use both: "We use the term ‘serious harm’ when referring to incidents notified to the Panel and the subsequent rapid reviews and LCSPRs. This reflects the higher or more intense levels of harm experienced in these incidents. We use the term ‘significant harm’ when talking more generally about practice and legislation." (page 11, paragraph 1.9) Language is important. How a child or adult describes harm is important. But the most important thing is that we act to prevent it, or to prevent it happening again and again.

National review into child sexual abuse within the family environment 26th November 2024 National child safeguarding practice review investigating the experiences of children who were sexually abused by a family member. 'The national review analysed 136 serious child safeguarding incidents, and 41 related serious case reviews (SCRs) and local child safeguarding practice reviews (LCSPRs). It explores the specific challenges which feature in the identification, assessment, and response to child sexual abuse within the family environment. It sets out recommendations and findings for national government and local safeguarding partners to protect children at risk.' #safeguarding #workingtogether
