A new report published today by the 4 Day Week Campaign and think tank The Autonomy Institute explores how a shorter working week for teachers could solve the severe recruitment and retention crisis in our schools. The report looks at some of the initial evidence from existing UK trials of a shorter working week for teachers and outlines a blueprint for a much wider adoption of a shorter working week in the education sector. One of the case studies included in the report is Dixons Academies Trust where teachers working at 16 schools and one college run by the trust in the North of England began working a reduced hours nine-day fortnight in September. Pay for teachers stayed the same despite a cut in hours. Another secondary school in East London – Forest Gate Community School – has been operating a four and a half day week since 2019 with successful outcomes for both teachers and pupils. The report; Reimagining Learning: Blueprints for a Shorter School Week in the UK, concludes that the emphasis on ‘fixing our broken schools’ needs to move away from a narrow focus on simply hiring more teachers and offering better pay, to include real efforts to improve work-life balance. According to the the Department for Education, nearly as many teachers left the profession in England last year as entered it and the report argues that this shows the Government's pledge to recruit an additional 6,500 teachers in England risks having little impact if nothing is done to improve work-life balance for teachers. In America, thousands of schools have moved to a four-day week for teachers since Covid in a bid to tackle poor job retention and recruitment rates.
