  • At the CSO’s Engagement with Provincial Institutions on “Upholding Human Rights” & Ending Gender-Based Violence, Mr. Rajvir Singh Sodha, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Sindh, joined as a distinguished guest speaker. In his address, Mr. Sodha highlighted the Sindh Government’s pivotal role in safeguarding human rights and preventing gender-based violence. He emphasized the progressive legislation enacted by the Sindh Assembly, including laws to combat child labor, protect vulnerable children, and landmark legislation for women’s rights to ensure safety, equality, and empowerment. He also spoke about the laws dedicated to the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).   • Chairperson Sindh Human Rights Commission, Iqbal Ahmed Detho, served as the guest speaker at CSO’s Engagement with Provincial Institutions on “Upholding Human Rights” & Ending Gender-Based Violence, an event organized by CPDI. Here's what Mr. Detho highlighted during his address: Sindh Government’s Commitment to Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) A grant of 2 billion PKR has been allocated across multiple departments to enhance the welfare of PwDs. 💡 Inclusive Planning: SHRC Strategic Plan 2025-2027 👉 The Commission has now prioritized a dedicated focus on advancing the rights and welfare of PwDs, ensuring no one is left behind. 💡 Vocational Training for PwDs 👉 SHRC is working on fostering partnerships with institutions like STEVETA to promote skill development and empower PwDs. 💡 Inspiring Success Stories ✨ SHRC assisted a one-eyed individual in obtaining a driver’s license, breaking societal taboos and challenging stigmas. ✨ SHRC took suo moto notice of a case where a person without hands faced challenges in biometric verification at a bank. The issue was resolved by enabling retinal scans for biometrics. 💡 Tackling Domestic Violence 👉 Mr. Detho also shed light on the Domestic Violence Roadmap created by SHRC.   • 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤: 𝐒𝐇𝐑𝐂 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝟏𝟑𝟐 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐞 Detho reiterated that the measles vaccine is mandatory. The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has pointed out that thousands of children continue to remain vulnerable to measles, a disease that is "entirely preventable through vaccination". In a letter, addressed to Director General Health Services Sindh, the SHRC's Chairman Iqbal Ahmed Detho, referred to measles related deaths of 132 children besides existence of 6,670 confirmed cases in the province in 2024 to sound the alarm. He stated that the commission has taken suo-moto notice of the reports about deaths, confirmed cases and around 13,000 suspected cases which surfaced the following year. "In the light of the gravity of the situation, the SHRC has taken suo-motu notice of the matter under Section 4 (i) of the Sindh Protection of Human Rights Act, 2011." Iqbal Ahmed Detho, chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission who co-chaired meeting of the panel organised by the National Advocacy For Rights of Innocent-NARI Foundation at Sukkur commissioner’s office the other day reaffirmed his support at the policy level, including engagement with the Infant and Young Child Nutrition Board to ensure gender-sensitive budgetary allocations for effective implementation of the Act. The meeting reviewed malnutrition crisis, with actionable recommendations for aligning government initiatives and stakeholder efforts based on orientation session on the Act. Presided over the SHRC Chairman Iqbal Ahmed Detho, the hearing was held in the deputy commissioner’s office and aimed at addressing impacts of tribal and sectarian conflicts on women and vulnerable communities. Significant suggestions given by people included organizing orientation peace sessions at the taluka level, conducting research on tribal conflicts at the university level and strengthening intelligence-sharing mechanisms among law-enforcement agencies.   • Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission, attended and addressed the Closing Ceremony of the Training of Trainers Workshop for prosecutors and lawyers on December 31, 2024, at Movenpick Hotel, Karachi. During his address, Mr. Detho shared the study conducted by SHRC, titled "A Roadmap for Addressing Domestic Violence in Sindh through Implementation of The Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2013 and Rules 2016". This study provides critical insights and actionable recommendations for effectively combating domestic violence in Sindh. The workshop, organized by the Islamic Research Institute, International Islamic University Islamabad (IRI) of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) in collaboration with the The Asia Foundation, focused on "Gender-Based Violence Reduction in Pakistan through Increased Justice System Capacity". It brought together prosecutors, lawyers, legal experts, to address gender-based violence and enhance justice system effectiveness. Mr. Detho emphasized the importance of implementing legislative frameworks, such as the Domestic Violence Act, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to ensure justice and gender equality in society.   • The meeting, "Advocacy Forum on Implementation of Breastfeeding Act 2023," was held in Sukkur under the chair of Commissioner Sukkur on December 30, 2024, at the Commissioner’s office. It was organized by the National Advocacy For Rights of Innocent-NARI Foundation, Sukkur and aimed to orient the District Administration at the District and Taluka levels, along with all other Department Representative of Sukkur. Mr. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, Chairperson of the Sindh Human Rights Commission, and Dr. Arshad Mughal, Deputy Mayor of Sukkur, were the honorary guests. The Commissioner of Sukkur appreciated the NARI Foundation, thanked the SHRC, and concluded with a decision to rename the DAP as the District Advisory and Implementation Panel (DA&IP) under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner, Sukkur.

  • Law & order discussed in Jacobabad seminar SUKKUR: The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) held a seminar in Jacobabad on Monday to discuss state of human rights in the district. Iqbal Ahmed Detho, chairperson of SHRC, highlighted the crucial role the commission was playing to highlight issues such as need to improve infrastructure of district jail, construction of a women and children police station in Jacobabad. He pointed out deteriorating condition of educational institutions, called for efforts to promote female participation in policing and the need for police reforms. Mr. Ayub khosa, member of SHRC, lamented state of public infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and police stations was dilapidated in the district, there was no trauma and emergency hospital in the city, which had inadequate sewerage.
