This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone as it is the first Neurolinguistic study conducted by the NeuroLinguistics Research Group, Pakistan in collaboration with Neuroimaging Research Group, Air University, Islamabad. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Huma Batool for her unwavering dedication and commitment to advancing the field of neurolinguistics. We also sincerely thank Noman Naseer and Syed Hammad Nazeer Gilani (PhD) for their willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research, intersecting the boundaries of neuroscience and linguistics. The Neurolinguistics Research Group of Pakistan attended the 3rd, 4th, and 5th days of the NRG Summer School on "AI for Brain-Computer Controlled Applications" organized by Neuroimaging Research Group, Air University, Islamabad The event featured expert sessions including: Jamila Akhter on the basics of fNIRS. Naqash Ahmad on the experimental paradigm. Urooj Abid on data acquisition using fNIRS. Our members also participated in labs focused on "Channel Selection and Feature Extraction Techniques" and "Machine Learning using Python." On the final day, Rehan Naeem delivered a comprehensive overview and lab on "Deep Learning." The members of the Neurolinguistics Research Group were honored to receive participation certificates from the chief guest, Dr. Umar Shahbaz Khan A big thank you to the organizers and instructors for an enriching experience!
On the 2nd day of the NRG Summer School, Dr. Huma Batool delivered an enlightening lecture titled "Neuroimaging in Neurolinguistics: Applications & Scope" with a particular focus on language and communication/neurodevelopmental disorders. Drawing on extensive existing literature, Dr. Batool explored how cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques like fMRI, EEG, and fNIRS are revolutionizing our understanding of language processes in the brain, particularly in individuals with aphasia, autism, dyslexia, and other related conditions. Key highlights included the identification of crucial brain regions such as Broca's area (BA 44/45), Wernicke's area (BA 22), and the superior temporal gyrus, as well as the distinct neural signatures like the N400 and P600 components that shed light on the complexities of semantic and syntactic processing in these populations. The lecture concluded with an exciting discussion on *Future Directions and Emerging Trends in Neurolinguistic Neuroimaging* in the context of language and communication/neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Batool emphasized the immense potential of integrating multimodal imaging techniques, leveraging advancements in machine learning for data analysis, and developing personalized interventions tailored to individuals with language disorders. These future directions hold great promise for further enhancing our understanding of the neural underpinnings of language in these populations and opening up new avenues for research and clinical applications. Another Achievement of Dr. Huma's Research Team! 😊 Our very own Alishba Khan successfully defended her MPhil synopsis on January 12, 2024. Her study, "Effect of Reading Speed on Reading Comprehension in English Language Learners: A Neurolinguistic Study," marks the fourth Neurolinguistic research exploration in Pakistan. Under the dedicated supervision and instrumental guidance of Dr. Huma Batool and Syed Hammad Nazeer Gilani (PhD), this research tries to explore the relationship between reading speed and comprehension among English language learners. Utilizing fNIRS (functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy), the study anticipates to provide insights into the cognitive processes in the prefrontal cortex involved in reading. By exploring the neural mechanisms of language processing, it aims to improve language learning methodologies, benefiting educators and learners.
