What comes to mind when you hear the words Diversity, Equity & Inclusion? Is it just about achieving gender balance? What about creating opportunities for differently-abled individuals, embracing neurodiversity, or supporting those with genetic disorders? How can organizations go beyond the basics to truly foster an inclusive and equitable environment for a diverse workforce? These are topics close to my heart, and advocating for DE&I feels like a personal mission for me. The Earth Observation market has always been a driving force behind my passion as a geospatial enthusiast. Inspired by the vision to address climate challenges and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I’ve been committed to exploring innovative ways to integrate cutting-edge technologies into geospatial solutions. The emergence of Generative AI, introduced through the groundbreaking paper "Attention Is All You Need," has revolutionized industries with the power of Large Language Models (LLMs). Subsequent advancements, such as LangChain and domain-specific AI tools, have further demonstrated how these technologies can transform various fields. These breakthroughs inspired me to imagine their application in geospatial technologies, promoting modern GIS,Cloud based Geospatial technologies and paving the way for impactful Earth Observation solutions. Motivated by this vision, During Aug,2024, we developed the first prototype of GenEE (Generative Earth Engine). This tool, built using the Gemini API, enabled intuitive geospatial data visualization and analysis through natural language prompts. However, we envisioned a solution beyond mere functionality—a robust, democratized system that utilizes GeoLLMs to interpret planetary-scale geospatial data on Google Earth Engine (GEE). Our goal was clear: to break down the technical barriers and make advanced geospatial insights accessible to all. Yet, like many ambitious projects, we faced challenges—primarily, the lack of computational resources. Refusing to let this hinder progress, we shared our vision with Google . Today, I am proud to share that our Final Year Project (FYP) is officially Google-funded, a first in Pakistan’s undergraduate research landscape. With a $10,000 research grant awarded to our team, comprising my fyp partner Ahmed Iqbal , our supervisor Dr. Sajid Ghuffar, and myself, we’ve reached a defining milestone in our academic journey. This achievement culminated in a proud moment at DevFest Islamabad organized by Google Developer Groups Islamabad , where we presented our work on GenEE. We showcased how GenAI capabilities could transform geospatial analysis, bridging the gap between technical and non-technical users. This recognition solidifies my resolve to advance GeoAI and develop solutions that redefine Earth Observation. While this milestone is worth celebrating, the journey has just begun.
