Dilmah Tea
Food and Beverage Services
Family tea company Dilmah is founded on its Founder’s passion for tea, its Taste, Goodness & ethical Purpose.
About us
Dilmah is unique; a brand that is founded on a passionate commitment to quality and authenticity in tea, it is also a part of a philosophy that goes beyond commerce in seeing business as a matter of human service. Launched in 1988 by Merrill J. Fernando Dilmah pioneered important initiatives which have become the hallmarks of the company. These are important because traditional tea, made in the ‘orthodox’ style – a production process that starts with handpicking the leaves and continues through withering, rolling, oxidation and firing – follows a technique perfected over centuries. It produces tea that are varied and sophisticated. The alternative is CTC, a relatively recent method of production designed to offer a quick ‘cuppa’ and in the process sacrifices all that is special in tea. Merrill describes CTC as ‘tea without a soul.’ Today Dilmah is the only vertically integrated tea company with its own tea gardens – some of Ceylon’s best estates – and state of the art printing & packaging facilities, tea packing and investments in every segment of the industry. Dilmah concentrates on offering tea aficionados around the world a truly different experience in tea, presenting an unmatched collection of teas, each tasted and selected with the benefit of decades of experience in tea, and most importantly marked by genuine innovation and a passion for quality. Dilmah restates its commitment to the values on which it is founded along with Merrill’s sons Dilhan & Malik. Dilmah is an Ethical Tea, in that all packaging profits are retained in Sri Lanka and fund the MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation. We believe that Business is a Matter of Human Service.

The COP29 event in Baku highlighted the urgent need for global climate finance, with a USD 1 trillion gap in funding. The Strategic Briefing on Green Finance in Colombo, organised by Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL) under the EU-funded SWITCH Asia PLASTICS Project, is a timely step in addressing this challenge. It brought together 32 financial institutions, urging them to embrace green finance for sustainable outcomes. Dilhan C. Fernando, Chairman of Dilmah Tea and Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL), emphasised the crucial role of financial institutions in bridging the biodiversity funding gap. Sri Lanka’s financial sector must innovate to unlock global funding and drive a resilient green economy. The event underlined the importance of local action in achieving global sustainability goals and supporting Sri Lanka’s biodiversity. We recently brought together leading experts from diverse sectors and a group of visionary next-generation town and country planners to address one of Sri Lanka’s most pressing challenges: the human-elephant conflict (HEC). Central to this issue is land management, which has long been a root cause of these conflicts. Earlier this year, we facilitated a specialised lecture at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home to equip these students with the knowledge and context needed to tackle this complex problem. Rising to the challenge, they developed four innovative alternative solutions, which they presented to a distinguished audience. Among those present were influential conservation leaders, industry specialists and representatives from key ministries, including Urban Development, the Mahaweli Authority and Agriculture. The event took place in Colombo at Genesis Sri Lanka - Dilmah Centre for a Sustainable Future. The presentation was followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya, lead environmental specialist for the World Bank, where these solutions were analysed and debated. This collaboration highlighted the transformative power of young minds, guided by expert insights, in finding sustainable and impactful solutions to environmental challenges. The four alternatives presented were: 1. Coexistence + habitat modification + No Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2. Separation (settlements inside elephant enclosure zones) + CAP 3. Separation + Habitat Modification + CAP 4.
