  • Large language models in wars is controversial topic but at Desupervised we believe that whatever we do with AI we have to do it responsibly and sustainably. This post illustrates nicely the need to focus on Scientific Machine Learning which allows us to include domain knowledge and safe guards in our production models.

AI & ML Expert | 20 Years of Building High-Impact Solutions

What if we pitched several Large Language Models (LLM's) against each other in a wargame simulation? Would it all just work out? With the current advancement of AI it should come as no surprise that armed forces around the world are trying to integrate AI into it's strategy and information processing. Indeed there have been reports from last year of the DoD experimenting with it. I don't pretend to know exactly what the different military organizations around the world are doing, but a number of application areas comes to mind. ℹ️ Advanced disinformation campaigns: We're now at a state where LLM's can produce, when instructed to do so, large amounts of "evidence" that a certain event has occurred or will occur. It's an effective tool to control not only groups but entire populations. 💡 Intelligence and information gathering: At the time of writing we have an unprecedented ability to concisely summarize copious amounts of text into a few bullet points allowing us to extract the essence from single or multiple documents. A task that traditionally would take analysts weeks to perform. ⚠️ Decision support systems: Often in warfare and quick decisions have to be made as lives often depend on it. However, it's more so the rule than the exception that information is not complete and it's hard to consider all variables at the same time. AI, not particularly LLM's in this case, can provide an "objective" second opinion which can inform the decision maker about opportunities and risks associated with any given decision. On a personal level I'm not sure how I feel about us as a species focusing on making "kill chains" more effective, but I do believe that this development is inevitable. What do you think about the use of AI in military applications? Let me know in the comments. New year, new you - new language? In less than two weeks, on Monday the 5th of February, you can learn more about the Julia language at the first Julia Copenhagen meetup in 2024! The meetup is hosted by Desupervised and we will hear about modern molecular property prediction using Julia by Michael Green. Furthermore, Claudia Budimir from RD8 will give a talk with the title "Breaking Ground: Prototyping Adventures in Julia". There's limited seating, so reserve your (free) ticket as soon as possible on meetup.com (link below). #julia #julialang #scientificcomputing #predictiveanalytics #predictivemodeling
