At CleverCoffee, we’re always looking for ways to do better – for people and the planet. That’s why we’re excited to be certified B Corp. What is B Corp? It’s a certification that evaluates a company’s entire social and environmental impact. B Corps are part of a global movement to create a more inclusive, fair, and sustainable economy. To get certified, companies must: ➡️ Show high social and environmental performance. ➡️ Legally commit to accountability for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. ➡️ Be transparent by sharing their performance publicly. Re-certification happens every three years, requiring businesses to improve their scores and meet evolving standards. How did we do last time? In 2021, we scored 88.2 points (compared to an average of 50.9). But this year, we’re aiming even higher. 🎯 B Corp standards are always improving, too. They now include: - Fair wages to close the gender pay gap. - Commitments to human rights and environmental impact. - Science-based targets to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Why we’ll never buy a coffee farm 🤔🌱 Since 2000 foreign investors have acquired 26.7 million hectares of land worldwide for agriculture. The estimated loss of income to the local communities is $34 billion worldwide. At CleverCoffee, we believe in empowering farmers, not controlling them. When foreign companies buy or lease farmland, it often leaves local farmers vulnerable to instability and exploitation. This practice, known as land grabbing, gives companies full control over the land – and the farmers. While selling their land may seem like a secure option at first, it can leave farmers in an impossible position if the company pulls out. Without the means to repurchase their land, farmers are often forced to leave behind everything they’ve built. When foreign companies profit from successful farms, that wealth is taken out of the local area. But when farmers own their land, the profits stay within their communities, helping them thrive. At CleverCoffee, we’ve seen how paying farmers fair wages leads to real, lasting change. To highlight the value of their work and empower them to thrive as equals in an industry where their contributions are often overlooked.
