Our Avocado Technical Team have been busy running Discussion Groups on growing fruit in medium-density orchards with smaller trees! The group explored how to manage smaller trees, the advantages and disadvantages compared to large trees and the actions growers can take to impact the potential profitability of avocado production in New Zealand. A huge thank you to our growers John and Liarna White, and Alan and Maria Thorn, for hosting the discussions on their orchards in Te Puke and Aongatete, respectively.

Trevelyan's Head of Technical Gordon Skipage and Kiwifruit Technical Manager Pranoy Pal recently hosted Fonterra Director of Research and Development Pierre Venter, Zespri Innovation Leader-Food Safety Agam Nangul, PhD, and Zespri Innovation Leader-Fruit Quality Monica Campbell. There were intricate discussions on similar yet different approaches to the 'cradle to the table' concept; is it milk or kiwifruit, in the paddock or on an orchard? During the packhouse visit, we also discussed novel food safety technologies and Trevelyan's Pack & Cool Ltd advancements in the knowledge of #regenerative agriculture. Food safety and brand awareness are essential in consumers' eyes, and there is much these industry giants Fonterra and Zespri International can collaborate on. Thanks, Pierre, Agam, and Monica, for these insightful discussions!

On Reclaim | Serious About Recycling's Reuseable Wednesday, we're talking Hairnets! From our procurement statistics over the last few years, we quantified that we were using and disposing of a very high volume of hairnets. In 2024, we encouraged our team to retain and reuse their hairnets, only replacing them when necessary. This behavioural change has been substantial, significantly impacting our reduction in waste- amazing work team!

In 2024, our Pastoral Care and RSE Teams have been working diligently on reducing the amount of waste to landfill from our RSE accommodation. The teams focused on mindful allocation to compost and recycling waste streams, resulting in a fantastic reduction. A huge congratulations to our teams for their efforts in this space!

We're joining in Reclaim | Serious About Recycling's Recycling Week 2024! Check out our socials this week to see what we’re doing on site to reduce our waste. First up, Procurement Monday! We’ve been working with our soft plastics suppliers to recycle what we procure from them. So far this year we've recycled approximately 8000kg of clear soft plastics with Fullcircle and 160kg of mixed soft plastics with Bay Direct!
