Did you know… There are two variations of braille used in New Zealand: uncontracted and contracted. Uncontracted braille can be described as the braille alphabet, while contracted braille is a short-form version. Translating the Māori language into braille uses the uncontracted variation for each letter with some adjustments to allow for macrons and one contraction combination. TEAM Architects Wellington has been mastering new skills to assist visually impaired members of our communities, working closely with the Blind and Low Vision Education Network NZ (BLENNZ) and an MOE Occupational Therapist. This project was both delightfully challenging and fulfilling. We designed and documented visual awareness modifications including installing braille signage, tactile indicators, handrails, and non-slip nosing on stairs for a school environment. To ensure a successful outcome, we fully immersed ourselves in the process by learning how to use a white cane and how to translate the Māori language to braille. The end result was an unobtrusive installation which provides support to those who are visually impaired. The installation has also promoted curious children to actively engage and learn alongside their peers.

Highlighting the 2024 winner of the Spaceworks Interior Architecture Environment Award: Woburn Masonic Care. Woburn Masonic Care has been recognised for transforming its 1960s building into a sustainable, resident-focused complex, incorporating natural light, efficient design, and eco-friendly features to enhance both resident well-being and community connection. ----- The redevelopment of the MVT Woburn Masonic Care facility transformed a dated building from the 1960s into a contemporary care complex for 62 residents, prioritising sustainability and resident wellbeing. With input from TEAM Architects and BECA, the project incorporates sustainable initiatives throughout its design and construction, reusing elements from the original structure to minimize waste. Key features include abundant natural light from innovative bay windows, thoughtfully designed corridors to enhance staff efficiency, and four internal courtyards that provide light and views. The project also includes significant upgrades to existing facilities, such as transforming the original administration wing into a welcoming reception area and repurposing other spaces for community use. Sustainable materials, automated lighting, and a solar panel installation further demonstrate the commitment to eco-friendly practices. This redevelopment not only enhances the living environment for residents but also strengthens the facility’s connection to the surrounding community. #ExcellenceInCareAwards #ACAConference2024

Join Warwick Bell, Project Architect leading the seismic remediation of the Wellesley Boutique Hotel. Learn about the history of this heritage building, the story of Freemasons buildings in Wellington, and how the two connect. The Wellesley Boutique Hotel was designed by William Gray Young, built in 1927 for the Wellesley Club. The club was established in 1891 as a ‘junior’ offshoot of the Wellington Club, founded in 1841. Since the 1990s, it has operated as a hotel with its second floor redesigned for Freemasons meetings in 2009. Warwick will provide an illustrated history of Freemasons buildings in Wellington and discuss the heritage preservation work involved with the Wellesley building. The talk is being held on November 5th at 2pm and is followed by afternoon tea. Bookings are open on the Wellington Heritage Festival website, cost $30 pp. https://lnkd.in/gTg9AdJH

Celebrating Significant Wellington Projects on Site: Insights from the TEAM Architects Forum At the recent TEAM Architects New Zealand Forum, we had the pleasure of showcasing one of TEAM Architects Wellington's recent standout projects, The Sacred Heart Cathedral, to our directors from across the country. Our peers fully appreciated our expertise required for this highly successful heritage project, reminding us of the vital role historic buildings play in preserving our cultural identity. We are always inspired by the collective dedication of our consultants and contractors, whose specialised knowledge and hard work make our projects truly remarkable. The guided tour of the Heke Rua Archives (NZ National Archives) construction site, expertly led by Crispin Jones from NDY was remarkable. This tour offered an in-depth look at the building’s sophisticated design and engineering, and we were all enlightened on the complexities of the building services required for its specialised use. The integration of intricate service systems and the seismic design strategy, demonstrated the precision, effort and holistic detailing that goes into creating such a crucial facility. The application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) was particularly impressive, showcasing how technology can enhance accuracy and collaboration in the construction process. We extend our heartfelt thanks to LT McGuinness for granting us access to the Heke Rua Archives site and their ongoing work on The Sacred Heart Cathedral Project. Their commitment to excellence in construction is evident in every aspect of their work, and we are grateful for their partnership in bringing our visions to life. #teamarchitectsnz #TEAMArchitects #thorndon #cathedral #church #architect #catholicarchitecture #parish #architects #TEAMWellington #wellington #commercialarchitecture #architecturenz #community #newzealandArchitecture #spacedesign #TEAMHamilton #architecture #communitydesign #sacredheartcathedral
