MEASLES POINT-OF-CARE DIAGNOSTICS DNAiTECH is contributing to a new project, “Development of a Molecular Rapid Detection Test for Measles Virus Diagnosis” supported by Grand Challenges Canada funding to Fondation Institut Pasteur de Dakar. Measles is a serious and highly contagious disease. It can cause serious problems, including brain swelling, chest infections, or death. Since covid, there has been a resurgence of measles cases worldwide, caused by a reduction in vaccination during the pandemic and a rise in vaccine hesitancy. At DNAiTECH we have developed PLACID, “paper-based LAMP CRISPR integrated diagnostics. This is a diagnostic chip technology, enabling the definitive molecular detection of pathogens. We anticipate trials with PLACID diagnostic chips for measles and rubella to be tested with scientists from the Fondation Institut Pasteur de Dakar in Senegal in early 2025. #placid #pointofcarediagnostics #measles

About us
DNAiTECH was founded in 2020 and is located in sunny Marlborough, Aotearoa-New Zealand. Marlborough is New Zealand's largest wine growing area. But DNAiTECH is adding a new flavour to Marlborough, we are the first biotechnology company founded in Marlborough, we are focusing on biomedical diagnostics, environmental testing and education. Our DNAiTECH technology enables real-time isothermal amplification of nucleic acid. The DNAiTECH is powerful because it integrates a small portable instrument with the imaging and data processing power of the Smartphone. The instrument is operated by the Smartphone via Bluetooth, with the phone camera providing the optical sensing of the DNA amplification and the data collection and processing via a specialized app. DNAiTECH can be used for any isothermal method for nucleic acid amplification. DNAiTECH is cost effective, has low power requirements and can be operated remotely with its internal lithium ion batteries.

Exciting news in pathogen testing! Our recent publication in Biosensors and Bioelectronics showcases a cutting-edge platform for on-site nucleic acid testing. By integrating paper-based Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) with CRISPR technology, we have revolutionized pathogen detection at the point of care. Unlike PCR, LAMP is fast, robust, and energy-efficient, with the added advantage of eliminating nonspecific amplification reactions when combined with CRISPR proof-reading and signal output. Stay tuned for more updates in this space! For those interested in reading the full publication, the link is found here https://lnkd.in/gwsgnUaW

DNAiTECH is very pleased to welcome Dr Honey Gupta to the team. Honey is a recent graduate from the University Canterbury and brings new skills in mechanical engineering, electronics and biomaterials. She will be a great asset to our ongoing diagnostics development. Over the years Callaghan Innovation has strongly supported our journey at DNAiTECH. Thank you Callaghan Innovation for funding this position. Honey's bio is as follows. As a researcher, I am fascinated by the interface between materials and engineering and their use in life sciences applications. A background in engineering and a passion for materials science led me to pursue my Master's in Nanoscience and Technology and PhD in mechanical engineering. I finished my PhD from UC in mechanical engineering specialising on biomaterials. My PhD thesis focused on developing aerogels for applications in encapsulating and delivering bioactive compounds. I thrive on creating novel ideas and developing practical solutions to problems that are of wide relevance. My specific fields of interest include biomaterials and functional polymers. I now hope to use my background in engineering and materials research to contribute to developing innovative solutions to solve complex scientific problems!

Since COVID there has been a massive increase in interest in new technologies for point-of-care disease detection. Detecting diseases on the spot, where the problem arises, is highly advantageous for managing a potential outbreak and promoting the best possible outcome. This need is everywhere but is particularly relevant for agritech and biomedicine in remote locations. The cost of testing, the time required to return test results from laboratories are often prohibitive. New approaches are necessary to make robust molecular testing more readily available. DNAiTech is working hard to bridge this gap. Meet Dr Murray Broom, founder and CEO of DNAiTECH Ltd, one of the startups participating in our Sprout Accelerator Autumn24 Cohort. DNAiTECH SCIENTIST POSITION. DNAiTECH is a biotechnology company focused on the delivery of POC diagnostic technologies for Agritech, biomedical and environmental applications. We are leading the way in the development of innovative POC systems using LAMP-CRISPR target amplification within a fluidic paper-based diagnostic chip format. Our ultimate vision is for the delivery of low-cost diagnostic tests for pathogen detection for resource limited situations. Our technology is fully at working proof of concept and in 2024/25 we will be transitioning to commercial devices. Commencing from February 2024 onwards we have a new position opening for a scientist at PhD or MSc level. This will be a Callaghan Innovation funded position, the Callaghan criteria is that the successful candidate must be a recent graduate, <12 months from completing their degree. We are looking for a capable molecular/cell biologist who is highly practical and creative, a team person who genuinely gets the DNAiTECH vision and would relish the opportunity to work across disciplines as our work routinely involves wet chemistry but also design and assembly of laser based fabricated prototype devices. DNAiTECH is based in the beautiful Marlborough region at the Marlborough Research Centre in Grovetown, Blenheim, the wine capital of Aotearoa New Zealand.
