Strategy, Advocacy & Engagement | Youth & Community Development | Youth Health & Wellbeing

I love my mahi. This morning, I'm bringing together a range of resources about Mana Taiohi - principles for enhancing the mana of young people in Aotearoa. I have just finished watching this kōrero from Ramon Narayan This time I'm not sitting in an auditorium full of Youth Workers like I was when I first heard this kōrero, but Ramon's words still resonate deeply: "We know that our young people are built with perfection and purpose, and that they have all the tools and answers they need. It's just that sometimes, their environment is not set up in a way that allows them to access their own power. So what we do, as Youth Workers, is curate and build environments rich with all the elements which enable them to thrive... we have plenty of road maps to work from - Mana Taiohi being one of them." • This week our CEO Jane spent some time with our members from Mayors Taskforce for Jobs MTFJ, sharing about Mana Taiohi, the Code of Ethics, and the power of youth development. Thank you for inviting us along, MTFJ team!

    MTFJ Programme Advisor

Last year I came up with this crazy idea to hold our annual MTFJ hui at the Zoo. Coming to Pōneke from all over NZ, how could we enjoy the city and reward the teams effort. Yes we engineered the programme to be about support and filling the cup of our depleted council staff, MSD teams and our most important youth focused coordinators. What we couldn't have planned for was that we opened the door for vulnerability, hard conversations, sharing and at the end of the day healing. I've said it to our young people and now I'm saying it to the staff, we see you, we hear you and together we have got this!! "Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness.” from the one and only Brene Brown. Thank you for trusting me Maree Brannigan, Nicola Anderson, Jack Fisher, Max Baxter. Thankyou to our presenters, Nina Ive, Ranjani Ponnuchetty, Jordan Gribble, Marcus Akuhata-Brown, Rachel Hawthorne, Life Keepers, Ara Taiohi, EMA. and our exhibitors LSV YEA (Youth Employability Aotearoa) Emma Anderson AgriAcademyIn, Lady Lash DairyNZ Seafood Nz MSD Digital Recreational Services, Hayley Rawlings ITS, Poppy Clapperton Outward Bound New Zealand, Krishan Kumar. And Lastly Wellington Zoo, Wellington City Council and Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ)

  • Ara Taiohi joins with others in the youth community to raise concerns about the disestablishment of Te Aka Whai Ora (the Māori Health Authority) under urgency. We stand alongside Māori, affirming their right to access culturally appropriate health support and to determine their own solutions and services. Te Aka Whai Ora has quickly demonstrated its ability to create transformative health responses for whānau Māori, tamariki and taiohi Māori. The agency has taken a strengths-based approach to health solutions and ensured that rangatahi voice is engaged throughout its service design. We echo the concerns from other community groups about the reach of this Bill. This include removing requirements for any Māori input into the Hauora Māori Strategy, watering down requirements for Māori input and considerations of Māori concepts, and significantly pushing back the timeline for seeking local input into localities planning. Like many others, we struggle to see the case for pushing through this legislation under urgency – a function that was initially designed for Governments to respond quickly in times of crisis or emergency. By pushing this change through, the Government has skipped passed the Select Committee stage where groups and individuals can have their voices heard in our democratic process. We believe many young people, youth organisations and, most importantly, whānau Māori will be impacted by this decision and deserved to be listened to by their representatives. We call on the coalition government to: reconsider and reverse these changes; reengage with Māori and with the Waitangi Tribunal to identify ways to build a health system that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi; and work towards eliminating health inequities for Māori and for rangatah Māori.
