We help FMCG brands understand the “who”, “what” and the “why” behind consumer purchases.

About us

We help FMCG brands understand the “who”, “what” and the “why” behind consumer purchases. By understanding motivations before the grocery shop, and how products are used after purchase, marketers can finally understand their full shopper journey.

  • We're loving Angel Bay's move to drive brand growth through NPD which targets a new meal occasion. Their Beef Sausage Patties target breakfast, a big opportunity outside of the fakeaway dinner occasion where they currently win. Plus their packaging easily educates shoppers on how to consume the product, all while seamlessly fitting into their range. This marketing move is big YES from us! Fantastic work Becky Turnbull and the whole ANZCO Foods team (**plus we can confirm the patties taste delicious too!)

🚨 Lost sales due to out-of-stock? A problem that continues to plague the FMCG industry. It's traditionally been difficult to put a number on the real $ value and lost opportunity of out of stocks and price discrepancies. This makes it difficult to understand where to invest in opportunities and have data led conversations with retailers on order patterns, velocities and unrealised margin. And don't get me started on promotions and pricing compliance! I caught up with Toby Hilliam (Skilton) from Appetise yesterday for a demo of a tool they have built to solve these problems (see some examples below). They have launched a Stock Tool that sources data directly from the relevant store data so FMCG brands can track real-time distribution, stock rates, and pricing across New Zealand and Australia. It’s a game-changer for staying ahead of stockouts, distribution, monitoring competitors, and maximising promotional efforts. 📊 Benefits: 💸 Identify out-of-stock periods/trends to recapture lost sales  📈 Track competitor SKUs and pricing  🛒 Optimise stock levels for peak performance  💰Identify distribution gaps and opportunities for new business The tool is super cost-effective for brands at all sizes and stages. If you are keen to trial the tool to see for yourself flick Toby Hilliam (Skilton) a message or comment below and he will be in touch.

Over the weekend Appetise celebrated its 3rd birthday 🥳 🎂 What started as a small team trying to solve the "whats for dinner" dilemma has grown into a company that’s transforming the way FMCG brands understand their consumers. We wouldn't be an insights company without sharing some key stats! 📈 70+ FMCG brands partnered with us across NZ and AUS 🍽️ 55K+ Households have trusted us to help them put food on the table 💡 2700+ Proprietary meal occasions (recipes) created & tracked 🥳 4M+ Dinners Cooked via our platform 👏 20+ of the best people in NZ hired to tackle this problem 🔧 1x rebrand (hopefully this number doesn't go up) But let’s be real—LinkedIn is often a space for celebrating wins, and these are just the positive stats. The truth? This journey has been anything but easy. It’s been filled with stress, uncertainty, and countless challenges. There’s still a mountain ahead of us, and we’re only just getting started. To my team & most importantly, my co-founder/wife Elise Hilliam—I couldn’t have done this without you. Bring on the next 3 - LFG 💪 💪💪

💡 Insight of the Week: The Power of Occasions to Drive Category Growth David Hughes, also known as Dr. Food, tells a compelling story about pears in the UK. Despite having some of the world’s best pears, consumption was low—about 6 times a year, mainly as a snack. In Italy, however, pears were consumed 22 times a year across breakfast, baking, main meals, and desserts. This broader usage inspired UK marketers to rethink their strategy, focusing on educating consumers about new occasions. Key Takeaways for Marketers: 🍿🍿🍿 🍐 Shopper Mindset: Consumers shop for occasions driven by needs, not categories. 🍐 Occasion Opportunities: There are roughly 1,000 consumption occasions—how many does your product fit into? 🍐 True Competition: Viewing your product through an occasion lens helps you understand who you’re really competing with. Shifting from a category view to an occasion-based approach can redefine your marketing strategy and drive true growth. The Coca-Cola Company has been doing this for years with their "Share of Throat" approach. 💡If you are keen to find out how you can get access to this sort of data without doing resource intensive U&As of Food Journalling Appetise is here to help.
