Welcome to Hell’s Gate. Sounds terrifying, but actually, it’s home to a secret of prosperity for millions of Kenyans. In the volcanic region of East Africa's Great Rift Valley sits Hell’s Gate National Park🌋 Wander through it and you’ll pass zebras 🦓 gazelles and giraffes🦒 And, in front of you in the distance, you’ll see a plume of steam blasting skyward. It’s that steam that’s propelled Kenya into a geothermal powerhouse. Tectonic shifts are literally pulling East Africa apart, releasing heat long trapped deep within the Earth 🌍 This gaseous gold snakes its way round miles of tubing, spinning turbines and creating electricity. It’s a source of energy that will be available for millennia to come. It’s sent Kenya to number 1 in Africa and number 7 in the world for geothermal power generation (ThinkGeoEnergy). It provides nearly half of the country’s electricity. Combined with hydro (30%), wind (12%) and solar (2%), it means fossil fuels now only make up 9% of their grid (The Guardian). But they’re not stopping there. Currently, President Ruto says they generate between 2-3GW of renewable energy per year. He has set a formidable target of reaching 100GW by 2040. He says this ambition is crucial for the region since “energy security remains a distant reality for approximately 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lacking access to electricity" The growth of geothermal and wider renewable energy in Kenya has coincided with a drop in the poverty rate from 36.5% to 27.2% (World Bank). The pandemic temporarily halted that progress, but the downward trend has resumed. Africa has a great deal of renewable energy potential. Stories of progress like this one in Kenya are encouraging that with big investment and fair distribution, renewables could prove of huge benefit not just to the environment, but society across the continent. #Kenya #Renewables #Geothermal #ClimateAction #MotherTree
