Fermentation is a hot topic in the bioprocessing industry where a variety of biological products are produced from mammalian cells growing in the presence of nutrients in given conditions in a fermenter. The end-products range from amino acids, vitamins, biopharmaceuticals, enzymes and food products. Inline refractive index provides a direct method for monitoring the dissolved nutrient, typically glucose or other carbon sources. When key nutrients are completely consumed the fermentation is stopped. There are well established measurement techniques to monitor the optical density, a measure of the concentration of viable cells, while KxS DCM-20 is uniquely designed for inline monitoring of total dissolved solids. https://lnkd.in/dM3fpqva KxS process refractometer DCM-20 with 1” Ingold process connection is designed with highest hygienic industry standards to integrate in pilot and high-volume manufacturing bioreactors and ultrafiltration systems. Every wetted part, from the sensor to gaskets and flow cells, meets strict safety and traceability requirements. Key materials like PTFE, EPDM, and prism materials are certified as ADI-free, BSE-free, and TSE-free. Innovation born from 40 years of expertise Over the decades, working in close collaboration with our customers, we’ve learned and grown. One breakthrough took us all this 40 years to fully understand and solve: ensuring self-cleaning of the optical window (prism) in various processes with optimal flow conditions. Incorrect sensor installation in pipelines can lead to fouling on the optical window, signal drift, and poor automation performance, e.g., excessive dilution of whey concentrates in membrane filtration or incorrect diversion of wastewater back to treatment instead of the drain. We simultaneously had to tackle another complex dilemma, securing high instrument design hygiene according to 3A and EHEDG. KxS Head of R&D, Harri Salo explains how the solution was finally achieved. "The development of the innovative new SFC Flow Cell was an intensive and challenging journey. From the outset, it was clear that traditional pipe bend installations were not a viable solution. Simulations confirmed they created the worst conditions for flow velocity and shear force on the measurement window, making effective self-cleaning impossible. We then explored a straight pipe with a T-piece, which performed better in terms of flow, but a new issue emerged: the sanitary clamp caused a dead space that lacked adequate flow for self-cleaning. This flaw was not only observed in simulations but also confirmed during the rigorous EHEDG testing process, where the design failed to meet hygiene requirements. To overcome this, we completely re-engineered the design. We replaced the standard sanitary clamp with half flanges, which allowed us to position the measurement window deeper into the flow stream. This minimized dead space in the T-piece while still utilizing the EHEDG-approved 1.5" sanitary clamp gasket. The result was groundbreaking: flow velocity and shear force on the measurement window improved by an impressive 240%, from 0.5 m/s to 1.2 m/s. The new design not only passed the stringent EHEDG tests with ease but also redefined what’s possible in hygienic instrumentation." KxS DCM-20 innovative straight pipe connection with SFC Flow Cell is a game-changer, offering optimal flow profile with no-compromise proven EHEDG hygienity. - Better flow velocity: Delivers significantly better flow over the measurement window than traditional elbow-mounted or T-piece systems. -Simplified installation: Say goodbye to the challenges of elbow pipe bends, which can be difficult to locate within the process and are often inconveniently positioned for user access. - Improved drainage: Prevents residue buildup, unlike traditional designs. - No risk of welding imperfections, SFC flow cell is machined from a single piece. #ProcessOptimization #Innovation #FlowCellTechnology #Refractometry #Automation #KxSTechnologies

Have you ever considered how advancements in sensor technology are transforming optical instruments? Modern Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors - like those in smartphone cameras are a prime example, offering incredible benefits for optical image detection. Let’s dive into some key advantages of CMOS sensors and why they’re shaping the future of instruments like refractometers. We'd also love to hear your thoughts—what other sensor innovations are you excited about? In modern digital process refractometry, CMOS image sensors have largely replaced Charge-coupled devices (CCDs), which were more commonly used in the 1980s. CMOS sensors offer clear advantages that make them best suited for refractometer optical image acquisition especially in industrial settings with challenging conditions. 1. Resiliency to external light Modern CMOS sensors are more resilient to external light interference, producing more stable readings even with variations in ambient light and can adjust well to varying light conditions without additional shielding. 2. Un-affected by undissolved particles (e.g., sugar crystals) in the measured media The architecture of CMOS sensors helps them cope with undissolved particles. CMOS sensors are indeed better suited to the critical angle measurement principle in refractometry, as their design optimally supports the pixel-by-pixel detection required to accurately identify the light-to-dark boundary in the optical image. 3. Higher temperature tolerance With the ability to withstand temperatures up to 20°C higher than traditional CCD elements, CMOS sensors open the door to applications in harsher environments, such as industrial, and outdoor settings, where elevated temperatures are common. They also allow for more compact and sustainable designs. This resilience enables the development of smaller, lighter instruments—a key factor in industries where material and weight constraints are crucial for sustainability goals. 4. Supply chain security and component availability CCD manufacturing has become more niche with the advent of CMOS. The ecosystem of CMOS components is more robust, offering diverse supply options that help mitigate risks in global supply chains. This ensures better reliability for manufacturers and users alike, making CMOS sensors a more secure choice for modern instrumentation. #KxSTechnologies #CMOS #Refractometry #OpticalInstruments #Sustainability #TechAdvancements #DigitalTransformation
