Can you upgrade an EMC chamber and keep the old, glued ferrite tiles? “It’s possible”, says Uliana Trucchi, one of our technical consultants. “Say you want to replace your old absorbers because you need to meet performances over 1GHz, and you wish to keep the ferrite tiles because they are glued to the chamber’s walls and ceiling. That is exactly what the people from Nemko in Germany asked us for the chamber upgrade in the photo.” Uliana was in charge of upgrading this room, which is ready to go into operation as we speak. Uliana: “Ferrite tiles are made from ceramic materials used since the late 60s to absorb magnetic waves. They come in different thicknesses from different suppliers, which makes it difficult for us to work with because the impedance between the ferrite tiles and the absorbers we use for EMC chambers must match when working between 80-240 MHz. Our R&D specialists, Dimitrios Barakos and Dmitriy Penkin, made the necessary calculations for this project to see if we could match our new absorbers with the existing tiles, and they came up with a solution.” Nicola Baus, responsible for marketing at Nemko, recalls a challenging process. Nicola: “Keeping the existing tiles was a huge relief for us. It saves costs and extra downtime for the chamber, which is just as valuable. The working conditions were not ideal for the Comtest installation team due to the lack of storage space, but we finally solved this by working with containers outside our building. Despite these challenges, they delivered the upgraded chamber in time for us to resume testing.” We advise companies that rent their buildings to use dismountable tiles instead of glued, non-removable tiles. Recently, SIQ's EMC test engineers successfully performed a Field Uniformity validation test that confirms that this chamber by Comtest Engineering can also be used for compliant radiated immunity tests according to IEC/EN61000-4-3. A test house like SIQ can benefit from using this chamber for commercial product testing in addition to automotive components. This increases their capacity and flexibility to serve their customers, resulting in a better customer experience.
What are the design criteria for CISPR25 towards absorber lining as per the latest standard version? CISPR 25 was initially published in 1995. The 5th edition, published in 2021, significantly expanded the category of receivers by including new technologies such as Wi-Fi, V2X, navigation, and more. The standard has extended to upper frequencies from 2.5 to 5.925 GHz to keep up with technological advancements and improve overall quality. Another critical change in edition 5 is section 4.3.4, which states that the performance of the absorption material shall be greater than or equal to 6dB from 70MHz to 5,925GHz. This is a significant change compared to edition 4, where the upper frequency was 2.5GHz. Partial absorber lining. Why is this important? Many automotive component test chambers are built with a so-called partial absorber lining, which means all walls and ceilings are covered with ferrite tiles. Still, roughly half of these surfaces are also covered with hybrid absorbers. The absorbers are typically installed around the test table in a ‘horse-shoe’ layout on the walls and ceiling. Moving the 6dB reflectivity requirement from 2.5 to 5,925 GHz means that surfaces covered with ferrite tiles only, the other half of the chamber, no longer comply with this section of CISPR25 ed.5. Testing and upgrading. If you already have a chamber, we can upgrade it by installing hybrid absorbers to completely cover the walls and ceiling. Additionally, if you need to have your chamber (ALSE) validated according to Annex I (long wire test method), we can perform that test for you. Comtest Engineering has the necessary equipment and skilled test engineers to conduct the test and demonstrate compliance. One example of this proactive approach was with our client, Marjan Mak, from SIQ Ljubljana in Slovenia – the leading EMC laboratory in the region. “When we purchased a new chamber from Comtest last year, they informed me about the new CISPR25 requirements and offered an alternative design that met all the new requirements. As a top-compliant EMC service provider, we must be fully compliant ourselves.
