Why Aren’t In-Wheel Motors (IWM) Commonly Found in FWD Vehicles? Fitting in-wheel motors in front-wheel-drive (FWD) cars has long been challenging due to the ratio of wheel size versus required brake size. The front wheels typically house larger brake discs—and for good reason. The more high-performing the car, the smaller this ratio becomes (as the brake occupies an increasingly larger portion of the wheel’s interior). In high-performance vehicles like hypercars and supercars, large brake discs are essential to achieve excellent braking performance because of their high speeds, intense deceleration, weight transfer, and tire grip. Herein lies the difficulty: integrating in-wheel motors into the front wheels while accommodating these large brake systems, maintaining steering dynamics, and preserving a suitable turning radius—all without sacrificing power delivery—is far from simple. At Elaphe, we’ve been charging these challenges head-on. Today, we held a press conference to announce our participation in the IPCEI ME/CT (Important Project of Common European Interest in Microelectronics and Communication Technologies), co-funded by the #EuropeanUnion and its member states.  At the press conference, Janko Kobal and Tomaž Motaln presented the two cutting-edge projects we’re working on:   - Power Electronics (SiC/GaN): Advancing high-efficiency motor control systems for electric vehicles.   - Energy Converters (GaAs): Transforming excess heat into usable energy for broader industrial applications.  Our co-founder, Gorazd Lampic, highlighted how such projects are crucial for meeting the needs of major OEMs, emphasizing the value of innovation for the automotive industry. The event was moderated by Iztok Franko, ensuring a seamless and engaging discussion with the press live and online.  Through the MEEV project, Elaphe is developing solutions that reduce energy loss, increase efficiency, and drive sustainable mobility.
