In 2006, Elon Musk faced a tough choice during Tesla’s Series C funding: ➡️ Kleiner Perkins offered a $50M valuation with a catch—John Doerr would need to join the board. ➡️ VantagePoint dangled a higher $70M valuation but came with no trusted allies. Musk chose the bigger number. But by 2008, the cracks began to show: ⚠️ VantagePoint tried to dilute Musk’s stake just a year after investing. ⚠️ When Tesla was days from bankruptcy in late 2008, VantagePoint initially promised $20M to help—but pulled out last minute, citing valuation concerns. Musk suspected a takeover attempt. Faced with Tesla’s collapse, Musk took drastic action: 🔗 He restructured the deal as debt to bypass VantagePoint. 💰 He invested $12M of his own money to keep Tesla afloat. ⏳ The deal closed just in time to save payroll—mere hours before funds would run out. The real takeaway? Picking the right VC isn’t just about dollars—it’s about trust. The wrong partner can bring your company to the brink. What’s your priority when choosing investors: valuation or alignment? #founders #startups #venturecapital #vc #fundraising

They invested $50K each for 20% of the company at a $5M valuation. Today, Amazon is worth over $1.5 trillion. Those 22 yes's changed the world.
