How to Design visually appealing reports regardless of the tool. I have handled clients or students who want to learn or use Power BI or tableau because they believe these tools will turn their boring reports into amazing report automatically. Creating great reports goes beyond any business intelligence or analytics tool though some of the tools have amazing features that makes things easier. There are best practices and pro tips you can incorporate to make your report look great regardless of the tool. Here are some few tips you can apply today to improve your report whether it is Excel, Power BI, Tableau or Looker. Provide enough spacing Space is essential for an effective report design because it helps reduce clutter and increase readability. Utilize white space to improve readability and reduce clutter. Consistent Object spacing Ensure that you provide sufficient and consistent spacing surrounding, or within, report objects. Apply Alignment When multiple visuals are on the report page, ensure that they're properly aligned, meaning that the edges of visuals should be in alignment and the spacings between visuals are consistent. Use Colors sparingly Use color sparingly and meaningfully because overusing it can be distracting. Stick to a few softer colors and pick your colors with purpose. Pick the right visualization The goal of using visualization is to communicate information clearly and effectively to report consumers. Make sure to select the most effective visual type based on the business requirements and the story. ▶ Always use a line or column chart to show values over time. ▶ Use bar or column charts when you need to compare data across multiple categories ▶ Use pie or doughnut chart(few categories) to communicate how a value is distributed across a dimension. Stacked column and bar chart visuals also work well for visualizing proportions across multiple dimensions. Strive for consistency Consistency should apply to everything in your report design, including spacing, colors, size, alignment, and especially to object format options. Applying these tips will help improve your reporting and dashboards. Thanks for reading. #powerbi #dashboards.

📌Power BI November updates: Small multiples in the new card visual + field parameter. Have you tried the new Small multiples feature in the Power BI new Card Visual? This new feature will be a huge changer for Power BI report designers. You will be able to create dynamic and insightful data visualizations with series of similar card tiles displayed together in a grid format, each representing a different category or dimension of data. In this video, I created small multiples using a field parameter where users can view the small multiples by region or country. 👌Great work by the PBI Core Visuals team. Adopting Agile Principles in Dashboard Design Even after thoroughly understanding user requirements, it's not enough to simply collect and analyze the data and design a final dashboard for them. Too often, data teams invest weeks building what they think is a perfect dashboard, only to see users revert back to Excel or ignore it altogether. By adopting Agile principles in dashboard design, you can create dashboards that users actually love and rely on Here’s how: Start with wireframes: Wireframes provide a clear visual outline and help validate design ideas with users early, reducing the chance of misalignment. Iterate early and often: By building a basic version, gathering feedback, and refining in short cycles, you keep users engaged and reduce rework. Focus on user stories: Translate user requirements into actionable user stories. Prioritize features that deliver immediate value and address real pain points, ensuring the dashboard meets core needs. Create continuous feedback loops: Regular check-ins allow users to test the dashboard as it develops, making adjustments easier and ensuring it aligns with their needs. Deliver value in phases: Release components as they’re ready. Showing progress and delivering value early keeps users engaged and invested. By embedding Agile practices in your dashboard projects, you can build dashboards that are not only functional but truly user-centered. #dashboards #powerbi #datavisualization

The Small Details That Make a Big Impact for Your Power BI Dashboard Design Creating a professional, polished Power BI dashboard isn't just about the visualizations you choose — it’s about presenting it with clarity and ease for users. Here are a few design tips to elevate your Power BI dashboards: 1. Leverage White Space: Give visuals room to breathe. Proper spacing improves readability and creates a clean, organized look. 2. Align Objects Consistently: Ensure visuals and text are aligned at the same levels to maintain a structured and cohesive layout. 3. Add Padding Around Visuals: A bit of padding around visuals provides separation, enhancing focus and reducing visual clutter. 4. Customize Visual Interactions: Refine how visuals interact with each other to ensure smooth, intuitive navigation and a seamless user experience. 5. Use Gridlines and Snap to Grid: These page layout options make alignment easier and help achieve precision in your layout. Attention to these details creates dashboards that not only look great but are functional and user-friendly. #dashboard #powerbi #visualizations

Yesterday, I had the privilege of hosting a Power BI webinar with over 100 enthusiastic participants! We looked at the essentials of Power BI, exploring data sources, Power Query, data modeling, and an introduction to DAX. We also took a deep dive into the various visuals and report development techniques within Power BI. 💡 During the session, we built a sample report together, and you can check out the video of the report. The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, and I’m happy to see the excitement around Power BI growing. If you are interesting in the recording, you can find it here: https://lnkd.in/dYkDK_Vs Due to popular demand, I'll be hosting another session next week where we’ll rebuild this report from scratch, covering all the features in detail. If you had the chance to join the session, kindly share your experience in the comment section. Stay tuned for more sessions starting next week—can’t wait to see you there! #powerbidesktop #datavisualization #dashboards
