Exploring the Volatility and Performance of Web3 Tokens Relative to Ethereum We have looked at the performance of public tokens relative to Ether, focusing on Alpha and Beta over a four-year span. In the rapidly evolving landscape of Web3 tokens, our analysis reveals some intriguing statistics that are critical for investors to consider. Here's what we found: Underperformance is Common: A significant majority of tokens, about 70%, exhibit negative Alpha, meaning they underperform relative to Ethereum. Lack of Leveraged Exposure: More than half of the assets, specifically 57%, have a Beta less than 1. This indicates that these tokens do not provide the leveraged exposure to Ethereum that some investors might seek, limiting their utility in certain investment strategies. Exceptions Exist: Despite the general trend, there are standout tokens like ENS which exhibit both high Beta and positive Alpha, making them rare but potentially lucrative opportunities in a sea dominated by memecoins. On the other hand, MKR has maintained its role as a safe-haven asset, demonstrating lower volatility in comparison to Ethereum. The absence of any asset consistently serving as "Beta on ETH" emphasizes the need for investors to approach the Web3 market with caution and flexibility. The popular candidates such as ARB, OP, and LDO, which were expected to align closely with Ethereum’s movements, have not fulfilled this role reliably. The dynamic nature of Alpha and Beta in this market requires continuous vigilance and adaptability from investors.
