Ever been zapped by an ESD discharge? For humans, it’s a mildly painful, annoying experience. But for electronics, it can cause a host of problems. Immediate damage is best, as it is detected immediately. However, minor damage can cause a latent failure later on – you just don’t know when. Naturally, the electronics industry has ways of protecting systems against ESD and procedures to test their effectiveness. When would I need an isolated power supply? There are some clear-cut cases where isolated power supplies are needed, such as in medical applications where patients and operators must be protected. But there are other applications, too. Examples are audio/visual equipment or industrial systems to avoid ground loops or EMC issues.
