🌏 Exciting advancements in atmospheric chemistry! A recent study in Nature Magazine by Shen et al., featuring our colleague Urs Rohner and the API-TOF, which we provide in partnership with Aerodyne Research , was conducted at the CERN CLOUD Chamber. This research reveals how isoprene drives new particle formation (NPF) in the tropical upper troposphere, influencing cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and global climate. The API-TOF played a pivotal role in uncovering how IP-OOM nucleates and grows particles at -50 °C, reshaping our understanding of these critical atmospheric processes. 📣𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁! A study in 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 reveals how marine emissions of methanethiol (MeSH) contribute to aerosol cooling in the Southern Ocean. Using our Vocus Scout during the Polar-Change cruise, researchers measured DMS and MeSH, showing MeSH’s significant role in increasing atmospheric sulfur and forming aerosols faster than DMS. These findings highlight the need to include MeSH in climate models to improve projections, especially in remote regions like the Southern Ocean. The Vocus Scout’s unmatched sensitivity enabled this breakthrough, advancing our understanding of sulfur cycling and its climate impact.
