As we await the news of who are the winners of the XPRIZE #Rainforest competition tonight and accompanying the #G20summit in #Rio, we at SimplexDNA 🧬🌍 are inspired by what this competition brought about. From new #eDNA sampling systems by our team members at namu to a data integration platform by GainForest.Earth. Our contribution? The world’s first backpack lab co-designed by us in collaboration with Patagonia and the #ETHBiodivX team for democratizing access to powerful genetic insights about the awe-inspiring species we share our home with. We achieved sample to insights in 2 hours for 20 pathogens using our partner Diaxxo AG’s battery operated qPCR machine. In just 17 hours we produced a species list for plants and animals inhabiting the forest from the depth of its waters to the top of the canopy! The equipment is simple, from battery operated centrifuges and PCR machines to the handheld Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencer powered by a laptop, we reimagined the lab to be possible anywhere, at any time and available to all. At SimplexDNA, we are on a mission to bring access and funding to all corners of the planet and collaboratively build the world’s first biodiversity monitoring system with Environmental DNA. Join us! Our CEO Tobias unfortunately spends most of his time on the phone or on his laptop, so when he gets a chance to hit the park for work, on a sunny summer day, he takes it. Here he is, amidst the foliage near the office in Munich, testing environmental DNA (eDNA) 👀. The kit came from SimplexDNA 🧬🌍, which has developed a way of assessing biodiversity locally through air, soil and water samples. VIDA already helps infrastructure investors assess a site’s proximity to biodiversity hotspots and protected areas, globally. But some customers may need more detailed local information and that can be provided by an eDNA sample such as this one. 🧑🔬 Did you know that biodiversity is measured at the level of genetics, at the level of ecosystems and at the level of species?
