Perinatal outcomes have been worse among migrant women, particularly mental health, maternal mortality, preterm birth and congenital anomalies. Access and use of care was obstructed by structural, organisational, social, personal & cultural barriers. Migrant women’s experiences of care included negative communication, discrimination, poor relationships with health professionals, cultural clashes & negative experiences of clinical intervention. Asylum seekers & refugees often face complex obstetric issues, sexual assault, unwanted pregnancy, offspring mortality, poverty, social isolation & experiences of racism, prejudice & stereotyping within perinatal healthcare. The combination of increased risks & decreased services can lead to poor health outcomes & even death. Undocumented migrants, in particular pregnant women 🤰 and their newborns 👶, constitute a particularly vulnerable group of migrants. They often underutilize essential maternal & child healthcare services 🏥 due to a lack of knowledge 📚 and fear of deportation. 🚨 The combination of increased risks & decreased services can lead to poor health outcomes & even death. Today is #InternationalMigrantsDay! Out of all the people who have had to leave their home countries, nearly 34 million are refugees or asylum seekers, and half of them are children. Migrant women & children have worse health outcomes. Amid rising global instability, we MUST protect the most vulnerable. At the PMNCH 34th Board meeting last week, Board Chair Hon. Helen Clark set the way forward amidst the continuing challenges of the polycrisis and the anti-rights movement, We need to look at the strategy we've had critically, how we've done against it, and how we can best focus on renewing it to maximize the effectiveness of advocacy.
