Researchers from the Brain Chemistry Lab show how peptide molecules called cyclotides from violet flowers, can increase the sensitivity of glioblastoma to chemotherapy. The article, published in the Open Access journal Biomedicines MDPI shows how the cyclotides increased cancer cell toxicity when treated with the chemotherapy drug Temozolomide. The researchers also tested a synthetic form of the peptide, called Kalata B1 and confirmed that it induced chemosensitivity in the cancer cells when treated with Temozolomide. The research is the groundwork for future animal studies to test the potential effectiveness of cyclotides in treating glioblastoma. Read more: https://brnw.ch/21wNFT4

It is our pleasure to introduce one of the winners of the Plants Best Ph.D. Thesis Award for 2023 — Dr. Noemi Svolacchia. Dr. Svolacchia obtained her PhD in 2023 from Sapienza Università di Roma, with her research interests relating to plant development, particularly systems biology and the molecular mechanisms linking cell behavior to the whole organism. "I think the open access model is a great way to publish scientific research. It means that more people can access the research, including scientists and educators all over the world" - Dr. Noemi Svolacchia See the full interview: https://brnw.ch/21wPwAN #mdpi #openaccess #plantdevelopment #research

All articles in Cosmetics (ISSN 2079-9284) Vol 11, Issue 5, are now freely available to access, read and download: https://brnw.ch/21wPKwg COVER STORY: Recent advancements in aesthetic medicine have introduced innovative solutions to enhance skin quality and appearance, addressing aging, pigmentation imbalance, loss of elasticity, hair loss, and scars. Exosomes—nanoscale vesicles crucial for intercellular communication—have emerged as key players in tissue regeneration. Clinically proven to provide anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and rejuvenating effects, exosomes, stem cell secretomes, and cell culture-conditioned media are gaining traction in the cosmetic industry. Human-, animal-, and plant-derived exosomes are seen as promising for skin prejuvenation, rejuvenation, scar management, and hair regrowth. This review from researchers in Switzerland highlights their mechanisms and explores their future applications in medical aesthetics. A collection of 15 papers, this special issue published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM) MDPI (ISSN 2077-0383) highlights recent advances in neuroimaging that have contributed to improvements in the acute triage of ischemic stroke. The advances covered in the special issue help to emphasize the importance of patient-specific, treatment decisions rather than treatment selection in accordance with rigid criteria. Guest edited by Prof. Dr. Gabriel Broocks of MSH Medical School Hamburg and Dr. Lukas Meyer of Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf. Marketing and packaging of food and drink have a crucial influence on consumer perception. In an article published in the Open Access journal Beverages MDPI researchers explore the impact of wine closures on people’s perception of wine and how it tastes. The article, cited in Forbes, showed that wine with a cork closure and its resounding ‘pop’ was perceived as better quality by the participants and was therefore rated higher. This emphasises how both visual and auditory elements impact our experiences when consuming food and drink and how we rate them.
